New Media Narratives

This second edition keeps the valuable examples and advice from the first edition. Notable updates and additions include Common Core, the use of story tables, transmedia storytelling, and a complete rewrite of the fair use chapter as well as links to video clips created with the assistance and insight of renowned documentarian, Dr. Jean-Pierre Isbouts. I have been using this as the text in my digital storytelling grad class for over 5 years now. It really resonates with teachers in any subject area as well as media professionals. I never had the choice of textbook mentioned in my end of class evaluations until I started using this one. To quote a couple of former students:
What you liked best about the class, "The textbook and readings!" and "I never thought I'd say this, but it was the choice of textbook. It really got into the heart and mind of digital storytelling."

Get It Straight from the Expert

Jason Ohler has been working with kids in digital media and storytelling for over 30 years. He was experimenting in the classroom with new digital technology as it was being introduced. He understands kids and he understands technology. His book is loaded with great advice and methodology that is very valuable for any classroom teacher. His book includes a very wide range of topical areas needed by classroom teachers who want to make a difference in advancing digital literacy for their classes.

Digital Storytelling

I found this book to be very informative. I liked that it was broken down into three parts. Part 1 is "Storytelling, Education, and the New Media." Part 2 is "The Art and Practice of Storytelling." Part 3 is "Going Digital." You do not need any prior knowledge of digital storytelling to understand this book. I like that the author gives real examples and explains what real teachers find to be effective about digital storytelling. According to Ohler, digital storytelling should begin with teaching about the core of the story. The three main parts of the story are the challenge, the transformation of the character, and the resolution. The core of the story will help students to dissect and assess digital storytelling. Ohler explains to teachers how they can incorporate digital storytelling into an already existing curriculum. The importance of storymapping is stressed. Ohler talks about making Visual Portraits of a Story. This is a way of mapping out a story and giving a image of what the story will look like. Ohler talks about Bloom's Cognitive and Affective Taxonomies. He talks about using this for transformation. In the final section of the book, technology is talked about. Before technology comes into play, you need a good story. The five phases of media production are explained. They are storyplanning, preproduction, production, postproduction, and performance/posting/showing/distribution. Ohler gives advice on the process and explains some difficulties that may be faced. He also talks about equipment that can be used, but says that it doesn't have to be expensive. He also discusses copyright issues. He has three rules of respect for digital media. They are citation, permission, and compensation. Strengths of this book is that it covers the whole process and gives real examples. A weakness is that it seems a bit complex at times. Overall, this book is a good resource.
