Great Asatru Intro!

This book is not only an intro, but it also has real philosophical meat to it that most other "asatru" books do not have. It describes REAL Asatru for TRU folk. No PC fluffy tru-isms here thank you! This book rocks! Read it!

Decent introductory book on Asatru

Essential Reading!!

There are not many books on Asatru out there and even fewer that are good reading. Most books are simply liberalism disguised as Asatru and one constantly reads "the ancient teutons believed this" or the "the vikings used to do that" one gets the feeling of reading a history book and not a living religion, not with this book. This book addresses a true living religion of today based on the living continuation of the ancient faith of the north. Furthermore it is one of the first books I have read that is true to what most heathen groups believe, rather than being some new age book in disguise. I would definately say if you are interested in Heathenry this should be the first book you buy, because also it includes a very good translation of the Havamal which is our most sacred text.

On the down side, this book is not very complete. I read one complaint that it doesn't go into the mythology and "lore" too much. Firstly it does address the gods and lore and such. Though unlike some books it talks about other things as well, primarily morality and ideology (as the title suggests) I find this as a good thing, as to me fairy tales and mythology only play a secondary role in religion and is over emphasised in Asatru. If you want lore read it from the source directly (such as the Sagas or the Eddas, though many Asatruar consider Snorri's work as sacred, Snorri was a Christian who did not write his works for any religious purpose and indulged in mostly entertaining stories and narratives, furthermore the bulk of the later "lore" is contradictory, therefore I recomend reading the older Sagas). Focusing too much on lore would be like saying to understand Christianity one must study in depth the mythology of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and such. Which really bear little relevance to the main religion. Also one will not find anything on rituals, holy days, symbols etc. This is simply an introduction to the philosophies and morals and such of the religion, then followed by the Havamal, and a liberal essay written by his sister on womens role in Asatru, which did not seem as well written or as conservative as his work but still a good contribution. So while it is a great book and a great starting point, in no way is it a complete one.

It addresses the racial issue, and spoke a little too much about it I think. One should not feel the need to argue constantly for many pages reasons to justify love of ones own people. But I suppose it is a sign of the times. Though I agree with his codemnation of the "hate" ideology that is prevalent in some Asatruar, I think he goes a little too far in asking us to show automatic respect to all races and religions. We should not by default hate others, but on the other hand respect is earned. For example if a group of people consistently underperform or succumb to criminal behavior and such, I'm not going to ignore such for fear of "invalidating" them or "hurting their feelings", nor will I ignore scientific or social fact or any othe form of truth, because someone deems it politically incorrect. Anyway I'm glad to see someone taking a realistic, and honorable stance on the subject without being a psychotic exteremist or some liberal white hating femenist either. He takes a sensable and logical middle ground which is neither extreme nor disagreeable to any reasonable person (even if you don't agree with every single detail). Also I feel it is a stance that would be agreed upon by most Asatruar. In summary this book seems to reflect the living embodiment of Asatru today better than any other one I have come across. I hope it will be translated into many languages and become essential reading in most troths, Kindreds and other Asatru/Heathen religious groups.

On another note though there are various things I disagree with in this book. Firstly I contacted the group that publishes this book about working together to further Asatru, they ignored me. Which is strange because the author says "there are no denominations of Asatru" and "We are all one big Asatru nation" then they shun outsiders. The other thing is they make up a lot of their own stuff, which contradicts what %95 of other Asatru groups believe, such as their 9 virtues being completely different. So when some other reviewers commented negatively about how they are trying to "make up their own religion" I understand what they mean, but the overwhelming majority of it is completely in line with what most Asatruar believe. However that's the nature of the religion, that people discover their own truths through education, and agree to a certain standard of morality, history and lore to unite us. However, I feel his stance on issue's is a good neutral ground where the overwhelming majority of Asatruar would agree with this book, plus the few points I disagree with are nothing compared to all of the great wisdom provided.

A few strange things are present in this book though. For one the nine virtues he listed are not exactly the same as that which is agreed upon by %95 of Asatruar that I know of. While his list of virtues are agreeable that seemed strange. The other thing, he says there is no priestly class of Asatru, which is not true we have Gothar, though rare in modern Asatru, these are people who dedicate themselves to religious service to the community, help counsel members of the kindred etc. perform certain functions in rituals etc. He also states that Asatruar would never restrict the freedom of others, which is a somewhat historically slanted statement considering our ancestors did involve themselves in slavery and lordship over others. Our old system was based more on the concept of loyalty than on personal freedom. Also he constantly bashes Rome, which is somewhat innacurate. Rome originally was a Pagan society that respected other people's religions and indigenous rights to at least semi-autonomy and to pursue their own cultural roots. It was the later Holy Roman Empire ruled by the Catholic church, that is the empire after it had decayed from its height that committed the vast number of atrocities and intolerance that he attributes to Rome itself. Rome is actually a wonderful example of European history that should be shown a little more respect, or in the least be a little more accurate when attributing atrocity's to the Romans. He also addresses our gods as perfect role models which is not in keeping with how they are represented in lore (as flawed beings capable of great good but also human mistakes). He states that the Christians misrepresented our gods as actual old kings and ancestors in order to weaken us spiritually, but actually there is a lot of fact behind this theory. Nor is it uncommon. Jesus Christ was a real historical figure, so was Buddha, it is likely that our gods were actual ancestors of great merit, which is in line with the fact that Asatru is an ancestral religion (honoring and even worshipping ancestors to a degree). They also are symbols of our folk and religion as well as emodiments of natural forces (consult proffesor Calr Jungs essays for further reference regarding such).

About the Author

Mike Hebert began coaching in 1976. During his career, he coached�the University of Pittsburgh�men’s and women's teams, the University of New Mexico�women's team,�the University of Illinois�women's team, and the University of Minnesota�women's team. In 35 years of coaching, Mike earned a career record of 952-392 and led teams to the Division I Final Four on five occasions. He reached the semifinals of the EAIAW Championships all four of his years at Pittsburgh, winning two regional championships. He was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Coach of the Year in 1985 and served as the president of the AVCA from 1987 to 1990. Hebert was a part-time member of USA Volleyball’s coaching staff for over 30 years and was honored with their All-Time Great Volleyball Coaches Award.

Now retired from coaching, Mike continues to work with USA Volleyball and is a member of both the University of Minnesota and AVCA halls of fame.

Advice on thinking about how you coach

If you're looking for a book to make you think about your coaching rather than just something that presents you with a bunch of drills and systems, then look no further than Thinking Volleyball. A 50-year volleyball veteran, the recently retired author offers his latest book as something he sees as at least attempting to fill the gap he perceives in the coaching literature when it comes to learning how to think about volleyball and coaching. I read both of his earlier books, The Fire Still Burns and Insights & Strategies for Winning Volleyball, and each had a big impact on me as a developing coach. I therefore much anticipated the release of this new title when I heard of it, and can't say I'm disappointed.

The broad theme of the book is being ready, willing, and able to think beyond the conventional. That's not as simple as being OK with taking risks in how you do things, though obviously that's a requirement (Hebert considers himself something of a coaching maverick). It first and foremost requires actually understanding what that conventional wisdom is, why it's conventional, and its strengths and weaknesses.

There are 10 chapters. One each is dedicated to offensive and defensive philosophy. These are the only two which could be classified as technical/tactical in nature, and even then it's not the main point. The other eight, in various ways, look at different aspects of coaching - things like running a program, developing a style of play, gym culture, team trust, and match coaching.

Personal anecdotes are a common feature of Hebert's writing, and he's got loads of material from which to work. They come from his own playing days and all the major programs he's coached. My one little criticism is that the stories are strongly biased toward the positive and maybe a few failures could have been mixed in for balance. Let's face it. Not everything works as intended and we coaches often find ourselves having to figure out how to recover when that's the case.

Chances are, at least one chapter in Thinking Volleyball will cause you to think critically about what you're doing as a volleyball coach. Hebert has applied his considerable experience and insight into a discussion of just about every aspect of coaching volleyball you could think of, and from all kinds of angles most of us will never have the opportunity to explore personally. From that perspective, I'd recommend it for coaches at all levels and careers stages.

Building a Team

A Great Book for anyone interested in building a Team, which is way more than putting together six players, or teaching them how to pass, set and hit.

There are many books about technique and drills, this is the first one I found that addresses questions as trust, chemistry, gym culture, reading the game.

The author explains his process challenging the reader to find their own answers (as he did with his players).

One of those books that gets immediately a special place in one's library, easy to grab, again and again. (I got the Kindle version, which is now full of highlights, but I'll probably get the paper one too. Such a keeper).

Thought provoking and entertaining!

This is a eloquent mix of stories and discussion that illustrate the attention, awareness and planning that can enable a coach to CREATE a great team. Other books put so much attention and discussion into the mechanics of playing a game, rather, this book does a wonderful job talking about the critical elements that make great teams! Such an important read for any coach!

Very good, but with limitations

This is a strange book - a mixture of scholarly research, history, biography, philosophy, self-help, and tinges of spirituality. That will turn some readers off, but I like the book because I think the author has done his homework and makes good points, the most important being that we can all accomplish more than we think if we're guided by a vision and really try.

That said, the author doesn't really offer a 'formula' for high achievement (genius level or otherwise), as some readers may be hoping for. Instead, he presents a large number of traits typically possessed by high achievers, illustrates them with examples (often quite detailed), and implies that adopting these traits will work for us also. That may even be true, but there are two issues here:

(a) It's not clear that any particular 'genius' possesses all or nearly all of the traits. Or at least the author doesn't make the case for that.

(b) Even if geniuses do universally possess these traits, will developing these traits necessarily enable you to achieve at a very high level? Not necessarily, we hear about those who tried and succeeded, not those who tried (in the right ways) and failed.

But even with these critiques, this is an informative and interesting book which can provide inspiration and useful wisdom, so I do recommend it to anyone seeking to enhance to their ability to achieve.

An inspirational piece of writing that can be described by in no other way than truly GENIUS

I had recently started an account with audible.com's subscription service (highly recommended). With that I was given 1 free book of my choosing. Prior to this transaction, I'd had my eye on "Awakening" as I was in search of a self-help book that wouldn't be too conventional. To my surprise, this was far more than what would be constituted as any kind of "Self-help" book. No, that title would not do the contents of this piece justice.

The best way one would be able to describe "Awakening your Inner Genius" would be as an Inspirational coach for your mind. Mr. Patrick at no point alludes to this book being any form of path to divine enlightenment as most authors of this genre would, but rather he presents the reader with the primary idiosyncrasies shared between the worlds most influential individuals and how they came about being refereed to as "Geniuses".

In many ways, "Awakening your Inner Genius" is as much a biography of history's most profound movers and shakers as much as it is a tool for enhancing the readers perception of the term "Genius". From the opening chapter to the "About the Author" excerpt in the final pages, the author expresses his charismatic and overall delightfully optimistic outlook on the human condition through his presentation of the subject matter. If this book has anything going for it, it's the fact that the author presents his work in the most accessible and enjoyable fashion that he possibly could. This was clearly a labor of love by Mr. Patrick, an assertion one can confirm only by seeing how eloquently he describes the life and times of Leonardo Da vinci, Nikola Tesla and Alexander the Great (among many others).

Now, subject matter and tone of writing are always important factors to take into consideration when writing a book of this type, but in the end this IS a self improvement book. So, the inquiry presents itself: does this book succeed in awakening the readers "Inner genius"?

The answer is yes, I would say so. I have never held such passion for pursuing my desired job field as much as I have after reading this book. I am a junior in high school; a crucial point of discovery at any point in an individuals life. I have been constantly debating with myself what my potential career may be, most of the time begrudgingly so. After the month or so of exploring this text, I have now found where my true desires lie and have slowly been working my way through the steps in order to achieve this dream. This book has posed a great help in this regard. Because of this, I may come off as a tad bias, but in the end i can proudly state that "Awakening your Inner Genius" has impacted me in a profound way no other book of the type has even come close to doing and I greatly wish that it may have the same effect on any and all who decide to give it a read.

Bravo Mr. Patrick and thank you for all you've done. I highly recommend purchasing this book.

About the Author
Jerry Cooperstein has been working with computers since 1969. He has a PhD in theoretical nuclear astrophysics, and has been using Linux since 1994. He has done many Linux engineering projects both at the application and kernel level and since 1998 has been developing and teaching courses on Linux Device Drivers, Kernel Internals and Systems Programming.

Very fun book by a good author!

I liked this book a lot. It seems that it could just as easily be a (somewhat informal) textbook in a classroom setting or a desk-side companion for a kernel driver hacker. The exercises are very much a part of what makes this book so fun. The writing style and content are a welcomed departure from the standard into-tech-slopping or disjointed glitzy spin noise associated with so many other books these days.

The content is very logically presented. It is straight-forward and solid. Every book has issues, but this one shines head and shoulders above the rest, IMO. While it naturally tends toward front-to-rear reading, it doesn't require it the way so many other books do. You can actually jump around rather free-spirited without the essential pre-reading dictated by those books that tell you in chapter one that what they just mentioned will be discussed later in chapter 8, but that [insert next 19 topics] won't be discussed until [add forward reference] because *then* something presented will start to make sense. What the heck?!

Seriously, this book is a great book for someone who knows C programming and isn't still looking for the 'any' key on the keyboard. It is very focused on the core information and details of writing Linux drivers as kernel drivers and loadable modules. The examples and the exercises are worth the price of admission, but you get a "right-length" engaging conversational road-trip with the author for free.

The cover art should tell you that this book is more about content and less about fluff, which is true. It is a pleasure to be able to recommend a book as fun to read as this one.

Touches on everything, master's nothing

This book was required for one of my Computer Science classes. It does a good job at introducing all the kernel parts, but doesn't go into great detail about any one. It's good for people that are just getting into kernel programming, but I got though the class by using Google and other references that are already out there.

Reads like a course overview

This book reads like a course outline used to teach a course. There are 35 chapters, most about 5 - 10 pages each. It begins by discussing driver issues, and devotes one long chapter (18 pages!) to character drivers. Then the book launches into virtually every kernel programming issue such as interrupts, timers, scheduling, ioctls, etc. Yes, these are useful topics for a device driver developer, but I have already seen most of these topics. The author seems to completely lose sight of the goal of this book: Writing Linux Device Drivers. Finally, in Chapter 24 the author gets back to device drivers and does provide 4 chapters on Network Drivers, and one on USB drivers. Block drivers aren't discussed until the very last chapter (9 pages including exercises).

This book can be useful as an outline, a guide to direct your online research (read, Google). But I very much doubt that anyone could write a meaningful device driver using just this book. If you have access to this book, use it as a study guide. But I wouldn't recommend buying it.

They'd wired the wrong house!

Jillian pulled the file on Stanley from the slot beside the video recorder. She flipped through the paperwork, searching until she found the interoffice wiretap order her uncle filled out for Ted's tech team. She ran her finger down the handwritten entries, then found the address she searched for.

807 Park Side Drive.

Except that Stan lived at 809.

She closed the file and buried her face in her hands.

Uncle Mick strikes again.

Jillian swore, berating herself for not double-checking all the paperwork on this case. Usually, that was her main responsibility as Mick's second-in-command. But she'd gotten caught up in the thrill of her first real, on-location, down-in-the-trenches assignment. She'd spent her time developing the operation plan, renting the house, assigning shifts for tails when Stanley puttered around town, and lastly, organizing her affairs so she could leave her studio apartment unattended for as long as it took to break this case.

Mick insisted he help. As president of the company, he was lead detective on all cases, after all. The least he could do was supervise the tech team's installation--especially with all the new toys he and Ted had purchased at their last convention in Las Vegas.

Glancing up, Jillian acknowledged that they had done an impeccable job. The views were clear. The sound crisp and free of static. She heard the precise moment Cade flipped on his portable CD player, filling the attic with the delicate sounds of Korean shaman music. Only problem was, instead of watching and listening in on a suspected con-man, her vision focused on Cade's tapered back, slim hips, and most incredibly perfect backside--the one she'd watched nearly until sunset. The one she'd promised herself she would avoid.

The one she couldn't tear her gaze away from.

Cade stood in the center of the room, tall and broad and completely still. Then with a quick, noisy inhale, he pulled his arms in front of him, steepled his hands and breathed. She couldn't help but watch as air filled his lungs, pumping his pecs with perfection, flattening his washboard stomach so his pants slipped a quarter of an inch lower than they had been before. When he breathed again, so did she--and the reality that she hadn't taken in air dawned slowly, like a summer sun that rises--and grows instantly hot.

Jillian, you're in big, big trouble.

"No!" She twirled her chair away around so she faced her bed rather than the screen. I can't do this. I can't watch. My heart can't take it. My body won't survive. She switched off the screen without looking, without allowing herself to think.

"Business, business," she chanted.

She glanced at the clock at the bottom of her laptop screen. Too late to do anything about this screw up tonight. Too late to even call Ted, whom she knew was on a surveillance assignment on the other side of Orlando, nearly two hours away. She had no way of salvaging this operation until tomorrow. Her logical, practical mind toyed with the idea of turning off the rest of her equipment and getting a good night's sleep.

She'd clicked off the visual, but the sound echoed through the six-inch speakers on either side of the darkened main viewer. Even, calm, male breathing became sharp whooshes of air. He'd completed his stretching and had begun his work out. The rough stuff. The real, sweaty, muscle-bulging, body-flinching part.

Rolling her eyes at her own weak will, she clicked the screen back on. Who was she kidding? This man wasn't someone to be turned off. She couldn't tear herself away, even if she wanted to.

Which she didn't. No matter how much Jillian told herself that watching Cade practice his forms for Tae Kwon Do was wrong--professionally, morally--even spiritually if she opted to open that can of worms--she couldn't look away.

She wanted to look closer. Without trying, he reached the emptiness inside her and offered her a brief break from being alone. From hiding that part of her that made her a woman--the part that sought an intimate joining with a man who would stroke her soul to ecstasy. His anonymity made him safe. With this semi-nameless stranger, she had no real reason to reign in her fantasies or censor her increasingly X-rated thoughts.

What the hell. Who was she hurting? She'd never meet the guy. He'd never know she was watching and she promised to turn off the video recorder the minute he did anything too personal or potentially embarrassing.

"Okay, Cade. This is my first night on a stakeout and I'm watching the wrong guy. Make it worth my while."

You'll need a cold shower

I loved the story, of a female p.i. whose firm wires the wrong house, and she gets a view of her gorgeous new neighbor, instead of the suspect across the street. One of the most sensual romances I've ever read, with a fun and original plot. In some books I skip the sex scenes because they are too bland, crass or ridiculous. I reread the sex scenes in WATCH ME; they are intensely sexy, emotional and believable.

Watch out for Ms. Leto's new hot blazer!

Readers had better watch out for Julie Elizabeth Leto as she delivers her sexy passionate Blaze romance Just Watch Me. Her latest blazer tells of private investigator Jillian Hennessy embarking on an important case that may catapult her to the CEO of Hennessy detective firm operated by her uncle. Hot on the trails of a fraud called Stanley who successfully sued the Tampas Police Dept for inflicted injuries, she uses her surveillance monitors to spy on him. When her uncle states the wrong address, she ends up being an unwitting voyeur drawn to the gorgeous Cade Lawrence - who has a hidden agenda of his own. He is also an undercover cop employed to bust Stanley and find evidence to expose Stanley as a cheat...
While the focus may be on the voyeurism and sensuality, Julie Elizabeth Leto proves even more laudable for the emotional romance that bridges two vulnerable souls who connects with love and passion. It is an essentially love story and Ms. Leto sensitively treads voyeurism to explore on the sexually-charged romance. Between careers, each has to make sacrifices and while Jillian believes the affair to be temporary, she has no idea that Cade had already lost his heart. Ms. Leto's romance novella is consistently readable and her sexy uplifitng tale is a winner.

Forbidden fantasies -- Very highly recommended

Jillian Hennessy has dreamed of succeeding her uncle as CEO in the Hennessey Group, a private investigative firm, since she was twelve. This stakeout is Jillian's opportunity to prove her skills, but instead of watching the bespectacled weasel that won two million dollars of the taxpayers' money in fraudulent claim, Jillian's eyes are increasingly drawn to the hunky guy across the street. Then she realizes that her team wired the wrong house. Instead of watching the weasel, she has an up close and personal view of her neighbor exercising, eating donuts, and showering. The view kicks her lurid fantasies into overtime!
Benched during a routine investigation following a shooting, detective Cade Lawrence accepts the stakeout in lieu of a boring desk job. His department took a lot of heat when the jury awarded the scoundrel Stanley Davidson money, and now more scam artists are lining up hoping to collect, too. Years of working undercover have virtually robbed Cade of his identity, making him feel like a chameleon. But his increasing attraction to Jillian has unexpected results. In getting to know her, he rediscovers himself. Unfortunately, the few relationships Cade has indulged have been doomed since they were always based on a false identity, and even though he inadvertently revealed his true name, he fears the falsehoods will have the same effect on Jillian. Yet he just cannot take his eyes off her, in the pool, at dinner, or in his bed.
JUST WATCH ME... reveals Julie Elizabeth Leto daring style at its' best. Voyeurism and self-discovery work together to create a novel as sensual as it is memorable. Who among us as not dreamed of that forbidden glimpse behind closed doors, or longed to feel the freedom to display oneself in an erotic interlude of passion and desire? Leto capitalizes on those forbidden fantasies and then adds complexities of work and goals that allow these characters to sizzle. Heated and bold, JUST WATCH ME... will keep your eyes glued to the page. Very highly recommended.
