About the Author

Recognized expert in men's health, Thomas Joiner, PhD, is The Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. He is an advisor to Men's Health magazine and is principal investigator of the Department of Defense-funded Military Suicide Research Consortium, an $18.1 million dollar project on how to lower suicide rates in the military. a book that can literally transform people's lives

Drawing on decades of research, Thomas Joiner weaves a neglected story about how the manly pursuit of status, power, wealth, and autonomy leads to great rewards in work and play but at the expense of loving, caring friendships.

Using rigorous scientific techniques, we know that what we strive for matters for well-being. Striving for wealth and power is less likely to bring about happiness and meaning in life than working hard to care for other people and developing intimate bonds. But if there is one thing we know its that whatever society rewards is what you will see more of. Have you seen Forbes list of the 500 foremost people who provide love, friendship, support, and laughter in the world? Nope. Have you received any feedback on your ability to make and maintain friends in high school, college, or in the workplace? Probably not. Have your friends and colleagues given you a surprise party to celebrate your amazing ability to ask questions and take an interest in what they are passionate about? your willingness to sacrifice countless late nights consoling them? Unlikely. But if you landed a work promotion, published a book, or appeared in a movie, champagne bottles tend to appear alongside lavish praise.

In this book, Joiner does not suggest that we choose between success and friendship. He suggests that balance take the place of overly simplified solutions. Conscious attention needs to be given to friendships. Without regular nourishment, relationships wither and die like any other living, breathing organism. And when important relationships falter, and they will, we need to replenish them.

Unlike many researchers turned authors, Joiner doesn't let the storyline get weighed down with intricate details of study after study. Instead, he synthesizes what is known and provides insights into how people can manage loneliness and improve their social connections. We are not talking about psychological disorders or mental illness. We are talking about the difficulties of being human. We are talking about issues that men rarely acknowledge, talk about, or address.

Here's hoping this book gets into people's hands. The science is strong, the writing flows smoothly, and the final section on interventions makes sense and can be readily implemented right away.

Okay, I haven't bought the book-- yet!

Having read one of Dr. Joiner's previous books, "Why People Die by Suicide," I so looked forward to the publication of this, his latest book. As with the previous publication, it did not disappoint. I admit I borrowed it from my local library.
I so enjoyed reading this book! It is crammed full of timely, excellent research, amazing insights, etc. This book is light years from the dry, boring stuff contained in many of these types of books. This book is so thoughtfully written, so completely absorbing, and so well put together that I could barely put it down. I have been employed in the area of social services for over 25 years and have a graduate degree from FSU where Dr. Joiner teaches. A good amount of what I have learned through decades of experience has been laser-focused by Dr. Joiner's excellent books.
I vehemently disagree with the reviewer who said this book has "Not Enough Meat." On the contrary, it is an overflowing banquet! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thank you, Dr. Joiner.

This book should be translated!

I have read all of Dr. Joiner's books and found each one of them insightful and essential. (I am a university lecturer, working mostly with young adults. My students' well-being is as important to me as their progress in my courses.) This book is a must-read for North American men, many of whom are single, childless, and, typical of North Americans, cherish their independence and self-reliance. But, as the book stresses, there is a terrible price to pay later in life for a life "unfettered" by close relationships. I taught four years in Hungary, and in a discussion with young engineering students I learned of the stresses and challenges men face in their culture. (Suicide claims many lives in Hungary.) I feel men in other cultures would benefit from this book, and I do hope that it will be translated into other languages, especially into Hungarian.

Elizabeth A. Segal is a Professor in Arizona State University's School of Social Work. Along with this text, Segal has multiple publications, including an introduction to social work text and numerous journal articles. She is a co-founder and editor emeritus of the Journal of Poverty. Her areas of research and interest include inequality, social justice, and social empathy.

Karen Gerdes is Professor Emeritus at the Arizona State University School of Social Work. Dr. Gerdes's areas of interest include conation and the conative mind.

Sue Steiner is Professor at California State University, Chico School of Social Work. These mechanisms include coordinated development of highvalue, privacyprotective health information systems, legislation that permits privacyprotective data use, open and transparent public communication, accreditation or certification of health data processors, transparent and fair project approval processes, data deidentification and data security practices that meet legal requirements and public expectations without compromising data utility and a process to continually assess and renew the data governance framework as new data and new risks emerge.

As a lifetime fan of Shaq's since his days at LSU... not only for what he accomplished on the court... but also for his childlike enthusiasm... and even though I'm older than "SHAQ"... as a single Father I used his respect and honor for his parents as a teaching tool for my young son. With that being said I still owe a completely unbiased review for all the people out there who are considering whether to buy this book or not. First of all the average person has to wonder if "Shaq"'s second autobiography in ten years logically makes sense to purchase. Obviously the facts of his life up to 2001 haven't changed. In my opinion it would have made more sense to start this book off more as a sequel to his earlier autobiography than another autobiography, because anyone that has followed "SHAQ"'s life knows that there has been more than enough success... intrigue... controversy... and all around entertainment in the last ten years to fill two more books.

There are two categories of people who might buy this book... "SHAQ" fans... and non-"SHAQ" fans. The reason I mention that, is if you love and enjoy "SHAQ"-Daddy... you'll read most of his comments knowing and imagining "SHAQ"'s big giant goofy smile is imbedded between every sentence. If you're not an unabashed "SHAQ"-Diesel fan... you'll probably find much of the commentary massively egotistical. (Or as my dear departed Mother used to say to me: "Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back!") "SHAQ" constantly brags about the money he's made... the houses he's bought... the cars he's bought. Oh man! The cars he's bought... and the egomaniacal reasons he bought most of them.

FOR EXAMPLE: One day after practice while still sweaty and wearing sweats he stops by a Rolls Royce dealership and is looking at a beautiful Bentley. It so happens Mike Tyson is there and "NEXT THING I KNOW TYSON HAS PICKED OUT TWO. HE'S BUYING TWO OF THESE CARS, SO YOU KNOW WHAT I'VE GOT TO DO. I'VE GOT TO BUY THREE! I GRAB THE SALESMAN AND I SAY, "I WANT THAT SILVER HARDTOP ONE, AND I WANT THE GREEN ONE, AND GIVE ME THAT RED ONE OVER THERE, TOO." I CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY HOW MUCH THEY COST, BUT I THINK THEY ALL RAN ME ABOUT $200,000.00 EACH. SO THERE'S $600,000.00 FOR THREE CARS THAT I CAN'T FIT INTO."

These types of incidents whether regarding cars or houses are rampant throughout the book. But there are also great behind the scenes stories regarding his famous feuds with Kobe Bryant... including when "SHAQ" had to literally be restrained from "killing" Kobe after Kobe broke a promise made to Lakers management by bashing "SHAQ" in an interview with Jim Gray. "SHAQ" also comes clean about some of his phony feuds that he played up to the media... including his made up story that Bill Russell gave him the sage advice to make up with Kobe. All of this reminds me of a comment "SHAQ" once made during an interview on TV... when he said: "YOU KNOW WHAT "NBA" STANDS FOR? NOTHING BUT ACTORS!"

Despite all the almost nauseating amounts of accumulated wealth and spending habits that would embarrass a drunken sailor who won the lottery... the most beautiful and touching "heart" interspersed throughout this gentle giant's life (if you put aside all the people a younger "SHAQ" punched out when he practiced his "hit'em" first mantra) is his unabashed love and respect for his Mother and Father. His real Father, Philip Harrison ("SHAQ" will eloquently explain to readers the difference between "real" and biological) raised him with an iron fist... and "SHAQ" has never forgotten where he comes from. The declarations of love and respect that "SHAQ" etches on these pages... are the same exact feelings I saw him portray courtside before and after games and in countless interviews for the last twenty years. And as I said... that's one of the main reasons I've loved "SHAQ" all these years. And the fact that like "SHAQ"... I'm a kid that never grew up!

The average fan will also have their feelings reinforced regarding selfish, spoiled athletes... who when they go on strike lose our sympathy... when you hear $20 Million Dollars a year in salary isn't enough... along with endorsement deals like "SHAQ" had before he played a minute in the NBA. $13 Million with Pepsi... $15 Million with Reebok... and $20-25 Million from Kenner, Spaulding, and Scoreboard training cards.

The author definitely tells it like it is (at least from his point of view) regarding the end of his Magic career... Lakers career... Heat career (Look out Pat Riley!)... and so on. I guess that's why an individual writes a book... to get his side out... *UNCUT* ... without interruptions.

Though this book won't win any Pulitzer Prize for literature... it is certainly an interesting read.

Sometimes I have trouble keeping up with who's on my husband's "like" and "don't like" lists of sports figures...

Since I'm not much of a sports buff myself, my sports "knowledge" is pretty much limited to the opinions of my husband over the years, and maybe I'm just imagining it, but it seems like former and current players sometimes switch between his "like" and "don't like" lists! I couldn't remember which list Shaq was on when Christmas 2011 rolled around and it was time for my annual sports-themed book selections for his Christmas gifts (my hubby always claimed - after having a bit of a tough time focusing in school - that he didn't like reading... that all changed when I started giving him one basketball-themed book, one football-themed book, and one baseball-themed book at Christmas, and he discovered he really DID enjoy reading - when it was a topic he was interested in!) This was my basketball selection that year, and he really did enjoy it. (I've always thought Shaq - what little I've seen of him in interviews, while commentating, etc. - was a pretty humorous guy, so I figured regardless of which of my husband's "lists" he was on, the book would probably be humorous as well. I was right! And don't we wives just love it when we're right?)

I enjoyed reading the book. Shaq is honest about his feelings about people and situations. He openly talked about some of his fellow NBA players such as DWade, Kobe, LJames, etc. It's interesting to hear what the real reasons are as compared to what you hear thru the media including NBA commentators. I agree with Shaq that a NBA player's success shouldn't be just based on how many championship rings you have. After all, it's not like golf where you're playing by yourself. You need a good situation such as another great player or two, and a very good coach and owner and GM that are supportive. Shaq and Kobe, MJ and Pippen, the big three in Miami, the big three/four in Boston, etc. And the supporting players need to be basketball smart as Shaq noted and hit the open shots. Shaq has a full life coming from a very poor beginning. A nice, success story.

It is just great for young readers as a first dictionary. The four colours to group letters of the alphabet is also hint to help them searching for words easier and faster, avoiding discouragement.

Beyond the Manual

REVIEW: The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook: The go-to-guide for assistant editors learning about Avid and their jobs.

I always find reviewing books about editing, particularly books about the technology we as editors use, difficult. They aren't difficult to read, its just once you've read one book on the technology there isn't anything new that you can learn from reading another book on the same technology.

This is where Kyra Coffie's book The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook: The go-to-guide for assistant editors learning about Avid and their jobs comes in and alters my view. Coffie has found a unique niche, the assistants need for technology knowledge specific to their roles. Many Avid handbooks simply regurgitate the users manual that comes with the software. Coffie, is an experienced assistant editor in Los Angeles and host of the Avid Assistant Editor's blog, a blog that focuses on helping educate the next generation of Assistants, is giving knowledge needed for the assistant to do their job well.

The information contained in her book goes beyond the usual manual and into actual tricks and techniques Assistants need to know. (*AHEM* *Cough* Assistants! Might want to purchase this). Here's an example of her knowledge based on experience.

In Appendix 2: Deck Configuration, Coffie, describes configuring decks with your Avid system. But she goes beyond the manual into the editing room when she breaks down the potential reasons that Avid might not be seeing the deck and how to work around them, a small but time saving element, not referenced in the Avid manual.

Many a time, I've seen young first time assistants wasting time on small issues that Coffie helps the reader prepare for, those pesky last minute problems. It also includes elements that many MANY books ignore, for example preparing for online editing, which she wrote with the help of Josh Petok, an online editor and colorist.

Many schools (Note: Not all but many) these days have become hyper focused on the technology and in particular getting students up and running for their projects. This usually leads to issues such as students not knowing simple things like preparing and exporting for sound or setting up for online. Kyra's book is extremely useful in this instance.

I always want to put my technology through the paces so I felt it was important to do the same with this book. I brought in a former student of mine, Eamonn O'Connell, who I was helping teach Avid to, and had him use this book while cutting a small project for AOTG.com. Eamonn was cutting a small video he and I shot about one of the founders of the Canadian Cinema Editors, Paul Day.

Here's what Eamonn thought:

As a new editor it's hard to come to terms with getting "up to speed" on the latest technology in NLE systems. When one feels moderately comfortable on one system more often than not, especially as a student, there's a change. Floating between Final Cut Pro or X, Adobe Premiere and Avid has challenges.

As a frugal student I constantly assess the need for more books, when most resource material can be found online. I've long operated on the when-I-need-help-I'll-Google-it mentality, allowing me to for-go shelling out several hundred dollars in text fees. That said, I still find my bookshelf playing host to those that I've felt are necessary and better than their virtual counterparts. Between my Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side Collection tomes rest three equally valuable film books. 1) The Filmmaker's Handbook 2) How to Make It In Shorts and 3) The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook.

Let's crack the cover on Kyra Coffie's latest then, shall we?

Like many editing texts before Coffie's, hers starts with the common "Introduction" and "Getting Started" chapters. But that's where familiarity and comparisons can quickly end. Coffie expands and remains focused on the tasks of an Assistant Editor (AE). Nothing more, nothing less - making The Avid Assistant Editor's Handbook (AAEH) a Welterweight Champion text; trim and lean, offering a knockout punch in the need to know purview of an AE.

AAEH offers several indexes and tables giving timely direction to the AE who's sweating under the ticking clock. The pages are thick enough to thumb through effectively rather than fumble with, like the flimsy pages of the latest edition of Oxford's Dictionary. Coffie's advice is quick to the point but motherly too - careful to point out hazards like, "confirm" and "make sure" before you move on to the next steps of your work. Coffie then makes you look like you're ready to take on the next feature film as Editor, not "Why is this guy in the union again?"

Coffie adds some flare to a library that's predominantly text heavy - After all we're editors, visual people! Full colour screenshots, cartoons and great examples help to solidify new learning, making sure that you can focus more on making cuts, rather than remembering a page number.

I must say there's something about the tangible quality a good text like Coffie's brings. There's a tactility, and pleasure from highlighting, dog earing and penciling pages that make me feel accomplished even though I'm still just a student. Finally, there's something to be said about keeping that second monitor free from a Google search window and using it more for what it was installed for in the first place - Bins!

As there's a bit of room on my bookshelf still and seeing as how FCPro looks like the Titanic, I can only hope that Coffie will write a similar book for Adobe Premiere. Then like my Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side - my film resource collection will be complete.

Before I begin this review, a few words about assistant editors -- they are the unsung heroes of post.

In the beginning, before nonlinear, generally assistant editors (except those involved in feature work) wore totally different hats than they do now. They loaded and cleaned tape machines, did layoffs for dupes, made copies of finished tapes, checked specs, slated and laid bars and tone, kept things manageable for editors and worked extremely long hours. But they usually didn't get deep into the editor's domain.

Today, they still work long hours, and still clean up after the editors they work with...but now, in the accelerated atmosphere of nonlinear, fast-turnaround and high-volume editing deadlines, they are our eyes, ears, (sometimes our brains) and our first line of defense. They prescreen, prepare and sometimes save us from ourselves.

In the dark of night, with ranks of producers, executives, changes and deadlines having taken their toll on an editor's health and psyche, the bond with their AE can be forged in blood. I've been there.

A good AE -- a truly good AE -- is hard to find and worth their weight in gold. They can spell the difference between a good edit and a great edit. Not enough can be said...they are my heroes.

Kyra Coffie is obviously one of those rare and extraordinary individuals, she is the AE's AE, and her new book is a painstakingly thorough, researched and exhaustive guide to how to achieve that valued stature of an editor's closest ally.

I have never seen a more detailed explanation of the AE's duties.

A COMPREHENSIVE LOOK

Profusely and intelligently illustrated with explanatory, full-color diagrams, Coffie follows the entire process of editing, going deep into areas not even many seasoned editors have ventured.

Running the gamut from capturing media to exporting, layout and slating to final outputting, with everything in between.

Coffie's methodology is intelligent and comprehensive, sometimes humorous. Having been an AE for over a decade, she knows what problem areas require elaboration, and in her thoughtful explanations throughout she provides a Did I Do This Correctly? section that painstakingly allows the reader to double check their work by asking concise questions (like a pilot's checklist) -- details that some seasoned editors can miss even after decades of experience. Her manner is warm and reassuring, and you feel her experience and knowledge. She doesn't just say how to do things, but why they have to be done that way, firmly guiding you along the way.

Almost everything comprising Media Composer is methodically explained and demoed -- from AMA to ingest to outputting, effects layering, and treating audio and video for export. Even the darker arts of transcoding, consolidating, managing the EDL manager, the dreaded Title Tool and it's style guides are covered. There's little that is not touched. It's all done in a systematic, well-explained and logical manner, wholly designed to make the editor's life easier and the job of show-building more efficient.

Coffie knows the relationship between the AE and their editor, and her vast experience is evident throughout as she explains why things must be done in certain orderly manners.

MAKING SENSE OUT OF CHAOS

As I read through the book, I understood more about why things are done the way they are on the Media Composer. (Many older editors, like myself, came through the ranks from linear to nonlinear without the studied discipline those who started out on nonlinear did. We had to apply old understandings of tape-based to a new world, and a certain lack of organization came along with us.)

Coffie's methodology and conciseness allowed me to make sense of areas not fully understood as she explains why she does what she does.

One note -- if you get this book, (and I wholeheartedly encourage both AE and editor alike to do so), save Coffie's detailed explanation of multigrouping for last. It is intense and detailed (80 pages worth) and could discourage you in its length and thoroughness. Go through the rest of the book first and come back. With a detailed index, concise appendixes outlining useful exercises for skill building and myriad vital checklists, her comprehensiveness is clearly evident.

This is not a mindless instruction manual -- this is a working assistant editor's bible, built from experience and success. It will educate you, it will demystify a daunting subject, and it will allow you to become a valued asset, as important and marketable as the best editor.

WHAT DID I MISS?

If there was anything lacking in this book that I had hoped to find, it was in the all-important subject of how to truly organize a project from start to finish, implement a logical bin structure and methodology. With the massive amounts of material we routinely run into today, the AE's skill at creating a systematically organized, logical and understandable project tree is essential -- breaking down through a clear visual schematic all the material we need: interviews, b-roll, sound, iso's, OTFS, beauty, etc.

To be sure, Coffie's excellent breakdown of multigrouping was extraordinary and concise, and I am sure she organizes projects with the same precision and finesse, but I did miss her tips at how she organizes what we, the editor, must look at every day -- our workspace.

Another area to address (where perhaps she can use her excellent Website and blog: [...]) is setting up ScriptSync sessions -- importing and preparing script, a powerful tool for Media Composer.
Regardless of the bits that are missing, you won't find a better resource for assistant editing on the Media Composer. I just hope I can work with her someday.

A must have book

This is an amazing book, that I wish I had a long time ago. Its great for Editors as well as AE's. I love how Ms Coffie gives a step by step guide through the workflows. Not only does she give you the proper settings for various workflows but she explains their function. This book is extremely thorough. The only thing I wish it had was some examples of bin organizations, but I guess that will vary from post house to post house. For anyone wanting a mastery of MC this book is a must have. There are other great Avid books (Avid Agility) but they don't cover what is covered here. And the material covered here is essential.

Smart solutions for space

Wow! I loved this book. Staging Space takes the phenomenon of event-based architecture and blows it up with stellar examples of media installations, museum design, scenography, and stage sets. The creative and inventive solutions presented in the book are sometimes out-of-the-box, but is a vast assortment of typically poppy and attention-grabbing designs meant to double as marketing and advertising solutions. Excellent resource for my own work.

Brilliant overview

Brilliant examples of innovative spaces in interesting spaces. I was looking for a book that would most comprehensively provide an overview of contemporary design within standard contexts, and the stunning phantasmagoria of interior designs -- warped, bold, bizarre -- left me with a whole palate of inspiration.
