Eric Brechner�is the development manager for Microsoft’s Xbox Engineering Services team. At Microsoft, he has also been development manager for Xbox.com, engineering learning and development, and Office Media Store. He has previously worked at Boeing, Silicon Graphics, Graftek, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The author of a book and blog on software best practices (as I. M. Wright), he holds eight patents and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics.

It is about good, old and infamous Project Management

Agile Project Management with Kanban by Eric Brechner is very different from the last two books about Kanban I have had an opportunity to read recently (Kanban in Action and Kanban from the Inside). It is about good, old and infamous Project Management, something, what many Agile or Lean orthodox people call bad and dead. It briefly presents precise and actionable ways how to apply Kanban as a tool for organizations of different kind and size. Despite being written by a guy who worked for a huge product development organization (Xbox/Microsoft), the book manages to escape insanely popular trend of telling how to scale Kanban, just as consulting business suggests to scale Scrum or Agile. Instead it meets the reality of any software or product development teams, which do not work independently. It comes with an open letter to upper management, which needs to support evolution toward Kanban, as well as with questions and more important answers you may need to convince your peers, working with Waterfall or Scrum in the past.

You won't find here too many details about theories behind Lean and Kanban, but just enough to know where to look for it and why things work better this way. The author, moreover, offers ready-to-use Excel sheets, to calculate just a few, but super important numbers and metrics for your team, so you can track some KPIs and improve based on real data, not just your gut feeling. Very concise! Highly recommended!

We had a supposed (certified) scrum master where I worked last but being my first experience with it, I was shocked how unproductive our processes were. After learning what scrum was supposed to be like, I realized how saying you practice scrum and doing scrum are two different things. Our bug tracking software (Fogbugz) included a Kanban board which got me interested in researching the subject which ultimately led to this wonderful book. After reading it, I have to admit I think this is going to be better than scrum. Can't wait to try it out. This book is highly recommended!

I love this book

I love this book, and I _love_ using Kanban. I use it at work, and my family uses it at home to track schoolwork, chores, and even some house projects. It made a huge difference for tracking schoolwork. I evangelize Kanban to friends and coworkers, and when I do, I point them to this book as a starting point. Simply put, Kanban works better than anything else I have tried - it strips away the unneeded stuff and focuses you on what you need to be doing with very minimal overhead. It is very flexible so you can adjust it for your needs once you master the basics, even to the point to adapting to the space you have available for you Kanban board.

Full disclosure: I work on one of the teams Eric referenced in this book. The picture of our Kanban board in the book was very early on when our team was still learning to use the full power of Kanban. We've improved on that early board a bit by optimizing it for our team over the 4+ years we've been using it, but even in the "early learning stages" Kanban worked better than anything else we'd ever tried. Like anything else, the longer you do use a tool, the better you get at using it, and our team is no exception.

Kindle formatting ruins excellent content--Buy hardback and use Inkling

While this is an essential text for Gyn Oncologists the formatting on the electronic version is atrocious. Tables stretch across pages, captions are on different pages than their figures, flipping pages back and forth creates shifts so images move from page to page. Extremely disappointing.

Update: I purchased the hard copy and use the free Inkling electronic version on an iPad. Excellent formatting. Beautiful layout. Worth the extra cost. Kudos to Amazon for refunding my Kindle version purchase.

I absolutely loved and enjoyed this book, it was extremely hard to put down. The author did a great job writing this book! I highly recommend it to all you ladies out there! I'm hoping for another book from this author hopefully about Joey and his life!

Why did I read this?

Angelica still makes poor choices and schmuck Blake still stands by her. Despite his romantic side, he comes off as robotic and not real.

The language in this book is atrocious. These people curse up a storm.... and that's saying something since even I'm known for cursing like a trucker. They come off kind of trashy and classless. Oy.

There are some feels here but only when the dog dies.

JAPANESE ROSE

Japanese Rose was an intriguing read to say the least.
Here is "what I assume to be a true story," about a young Japanese woman named "Sayuri Miyamoto" who disguised herself as a man and became a Kamikaze pilot during the later part of WWII. She actually flew her last mission but, was shot down pre-maturely, captured, returned to Japan and subsequently given a new identity so as not to embarrass the Imperial Japanese Army and it's Bushido codes.
As unique and unbelievable as this may sound, it apparently happened and, the events that lead up to this life-time crescendo are just as interesting to read.
There are numerous typo's, and spacing anomalies, but the story is damn good.
There are parts that seem a bit too over-dramatic and "mushy" reminding me of the events in the Movie, "Titanic" where a blossoming love affair grows between "Jack Dawson" and "Rose Dewitt".
There is a great similarity in the telling of this story with that of "The Titanic", except in this case, the vehicle that introduces this War time love affair is not a passenger ship, but... A Kamikaze training camp and eventual last mission .
There are many strands within this story and one cannot help but feel sympathy, and sadness for a couple so deeply in love caught within the webs of life's destiny.
Despite the numerous typos and poor editing...the book is very good and leaves the reader much food for thought. It is well worth the price... enjoy the story.

Membro da Comissão Nacional de Moçambique de 1978 a 1980, é o responsável pela preparação da Selecção Nacional de Angola que disputa, em Barcelos e Lisboa, o 25.� Campeonato do Mundo.

A model for many other history textbooks

One of the most direct and succinct textbooks I have used, Gordon streamlines the presentation of history in the interest of keeping his discussion of the material on track, and the reader engaged and focused. Though some may object to Gordon's lower use of illustrating examples and less in depth discussion of particular topics, the end result of creating a less dense textbook that is more pleasant to read and more engaging is ultimately worth it. Instructors using this as assigned reading should be sure to spend time on presenting material of focus in more depth, while students should realize that this textbook will likely not cover everything they will need to know in full depth.

About the Author

Emmy Abdul Alim is Editor for Thomson Reuters' Islamic Finance Gateway. Away from Thomson Reuters, she has been writing independently about Islamic finance since 2010. She has an MBA, Finance, from the University of Aberdeen; a BA (Hons) in Arabic and Islamic studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and a BA in English and European studies from the National University of Singapore. Before making the switch to editing and writing about business and Islamic finance, Emmy worked professionally in the performing arts, primarily in her native Singapore. Since then she has lived and worked in the United Kingdom, Egypt, the Netherlands, and Malaysia.

Solid introduction and reference

The ISBN 1118465245 (Global Leaders in Islamic Finance, 1st ed.) is well published, without difficult technical aspects, and a decent introduction to mysterious Islamic finances. They also have their own bad apple, namely the 2014 execution of Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death by the Iranian court for $2.6 billion state bank fraud - the largest since the country's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It is grammatically well written, illustrated in black and white with several figures pretending to show something meaningful, and easy to understand by non-professionals despite its apparent technicality. The book is up to date and applicable especially for studying dictatorial practices and corruption. It provides an easy access to the subject and thus it belongs in every public library also as a simple reference work. Approx. 103 pages incl. the index are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on good paper, and hard-bound incl. a nice dust jacket. The covers are strong and flexibly jointed.

Interesting Survey of Recent (past 40 years) People in Islamic Finance

First of all, this book does not really describe in detail the actual workings of Islamic finance. Instead, it delves into exactly what the title suggests: "Global Leaders in Islamic Finance........" Not really difficult, but certainly filled with interesting characters, and their own visions and actions about the subject since around 1970. If you really want to know how it affects the world markets, and the persons behind it, this is a great book. Perhaps, the non-technical aspect of the book is also a great positive since it keeps the book a good read, interesting, and not too complex for the ordinary person just interested in the subject!

Bios of leaders in Islamic finance; some background knowledge recommended

I read this book because it looked interesting.

The book is chapter long biographies of Islamic financial leaders. Generally, these are people who are still alive and who have had major roles in banking and shaping the way the finance system is structured now in the Islamic world. The book also goes into historyof financial institutions and banks, and the human connections between these institutions.

I have woefully little background knowledge in politics, history, geography, or finance. Because of that, much of this book was just me seeing the setting. For example, if a biography subject lived through a major political event, then that got mentioned, and I learned that that thing happened. So, for me, the book was all setting.

Overall, this is a well researched and readable book. If you have a reason to want to bone up on the topic, or if you want a biography of a key figure or history of a bank or financial institution in the field, then this is worth checking.
