OK, but not the best

Not terrible, but it could be better.
There are strength and weakness.

The strength of book is practice problems with solutions.
Although it provides only the final answers,
they are very helpful, because many problems ask to draw plots, and the answer is right there.

Now the weakness of book.
First, chapters on discrete systems are often written much briefer than equivalent chapters for continuous systems,
making it impossible to understand discrete systems before continuous systems.
It would be much better if chapters on both continuous and discrete systems are self-contained,
so that the reader can start with either one.

Second, it can lead to misunderstanding on DTFS and DFT.
It compares {CTFS, DFT} as a continuous-discrete pair. (which is wrong, it should be {CTFS, DTFS} pair).
The DTFS is covered very briefly. (2 pages)
This kind of structure can cause misunderstandings.

Now, here is my suggestion.
1. Signals and Systems (2nd Edition)
The standard. Excellent structure.
but weak on some topics (LTI system properties, filters, etc).
2. Continuous and Discrete Time Signals and Systems with CD-ROM
Excellent structure. Very clear explanation. Lots of Figures (helpful in convolution). Covers filter design.
3. Linear Systems and Signals, 2nd Edition
Excellent for self-study. Very clear explanation.
but the chapter order may be different from class lecture (Laplace & z comes before Fourier)

Not a good book at all as an introductory signal class. I'd suggest to use books by B.P Lath, and stay away from this book as far as possible.

Bad book, select much better books by Laithi or Oppenheim

Terrible book. Would recommend books such as Oppenheim's Signals and Systems or Laithi's Linear Systems and Signals.
A very good book on the subject that is easy to follow as a quick guide is Signals and Systems Made Ridiculously Simple
by Zoher Z. Karu.
Stay away from Roberts book if at all possible. Confuses even easy to understand topics.

About the Author

Janick Bergeron is a Scientist at Synopsys, Inc. He is the author of the best-selling book Writing Testbenches: Functional Verification of HDL Models and the moderator of the Verification Guild. Prior to joining Synopsys, Janick worked on verification methodology at Qualis Design Corporation and Bell-Northern Research. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the Universit� du Qu�bec, and an MBA degree granted through the University of Oregon.

Eduard Cerny is a Principal Engineer, R&D, in the Verification Group at Synopsys, Inc. He joined Synopsys in 2001 after 25 years in academia, as Professor of Computer Science at the Universit� de Montr�al. Eduard has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Loyola College in Montreal, Canada, and a M.Eng. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His interests have been in design, verification and test of hardware, and he is author of many articles in these areas.

Alan Hunter, BEng(Hons), MSc, is the Design Verification Methodology Programme manager at ARM Ltd. and is leading the design verification methodology work for ARM worldwide. This work covers all areas from CPU design verification through systems and system component design verification. His main areas of interest include optimizing design verification efficiency and quality, formal methods, and determinism in the design verification flow. Prior to joining ARM, Alan worked for a small formal verification company specializing in property and equivalence checking.

Andy Nightingale, BEng(Hons), MBCS CITP, is a consultant engineer at ARM Ltd and has led the SoC Verification group in ARM’s Cambridge and Sheffield design centers for the past four years. The group covers ARM PrimeXSys platforms and PrimeCell development, including advanced AXI- and AHB-based system backplane components such as bus interconnects and high-performance memory controllers. Prior to working at ARM, Andy worked as a real-time embedded systems engineer for a successful scientific instrument company, primarily serving the semiconductor industry.

Please don't mistake this to be a complete SystemVerilog Bible. This is Verification Methodology Manual (VMM), and after reading this book, it's not a bad idea to think if this methodology is the right one for your project.

This book outlines several "rules", "recommendations", "suggestions" and "alternatives" in using VMM for your project. I found these to be useful to a certain extent. Although the examples weren't quite informative. For starters I would also suggest reading general book on object oriented programming along with this book.

If you happen to have complete VCS installed, you would get this book (pdf version) for FREE along with the VCS documentation. I came to know about this after buying this book. Any ways, it is good to have a hard copy.

Also, I found it useful to have other SystemVerilog books along with this one. It makes life easy to understand a (new) language and (new) methodology.

VMM is difficult

The book starts off fairly well through the first three chapters. Then all of a sudden it makes a huge leap and it becomes very difficult to follow. There are a lot of very advanced topics that require a lot of object oriented programming experience to understand. On my second reading I saw that even Janick says that he does not expect you to understand VMM on the first reading.

A class based methodology is a complex topic and the VMM book does not do much to make it any easier. If you are a C++ (or something similar) guru, then you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, save your money and download the white papers from the web.

Great book to learn about VMM.

I got this book at work to learn about VMM and the use of it.

It covers high level concepts and recommendations on developing a successful verification environment. It does not teach you the syntax or the basics of System Verilog. Beside teaching you these high level concepts, it covers in detail the use of the VMM base classes offered with Synopsys' VCS tools.

The book has code example in each topic covered which will make it easier to understand.

The topics covered include, but not limited to, Verification planning, assertions, testbench infrastructure, stimulus/response and coverage.

If you are using VMM in your development, then this book is definitely the manual that goes with it.

A must have for a successful verification engineer working with VMM. (6 out of 5 stars)

This is an pedestrian study from the noted and popular religion scholar, in which Armstrong takes a historical approach to myth, tracing its evolution through a series of periods, from the Paleolithic to the postmyth Great Western Transformation. Each period developed myths reflecting its major concerns: images of hunting and the huntress dominated the myths of the Paleolithic, while the myths of Persephone and Demeter, Isis and Osiris developed in the agricultural Neolithic period. By the Axial Age (200 B.C. through A.D. 1500), myths became internalized, so that they no longer needed to be acted out. Reason, says Armstrong, largely supplanted myth in the Post-Axial Period, which she sees as a source of cultural and spiritual impoverishment; she even appears, simplistically, to attribute genocide to the loss of "the sense of sacredness" myth offers. Armstrong goes on to relate that in the 20th century, a number of writers, such as Eliot, Joyce, Mann and Rushdie, recovered the power of myth for contemporary culture. Although the book offers no new perspectives or information on the history of myth, it does provide a functional survey of mythology's history. But a more engaging choice would be Kenneth Davis's Don't Know Much About Mythology (Reviews, Sept. 5). (Nov.)

In this essay, superpopular religion historian Armstrong (Islam: A Short History, 2000) fastens the attributes of myth to the major chronological categories of human history. At each transition from the Paleolithic to scientific eras, she argues that a mythical conception of natural forces has drifted ever further from interpretation in pragmatic and logical terms, such that myth in modern times is a beleaguered species of fiction. To Armstrong this state reflects a profound misunderstanding of what myth is and does. Defining it as an art form that, on the assumption of the existence of an invisible realm of reality, protects one against the despair arising from the limitations of the tactile world (death in particular), Armstrong relates how mythology has historically been reformulated. She traces a theogony, illustrating it with examples from Chinese, Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Greek cultures, as sky worship phased into anthropomorphic gods and then into ethical systems such as those of Confucius or Jesus. Written with great explanatory clarity, Armstrong's review of mythology is an efficient, fascinating experience. Gilbert Taylor

Short in length, Long in perspective

In a swift 149 pages, Karen Armstrong covers a lot of ground. She communicates the importance of myth. She shows how myth has evolved through history, moving through different phases (the Paleolithic; the Neolithic; Early Civilization; the Axial Age; the Post-Axial Period; and, the Great Western Transformation [encompassing the scientific revolution leading to the enlightenment, modernism, and post-modernism]). In each of these periods, we get a strong sense of how mythology shaped the fabric of society, and how social, intellectual, political, and economic factors in turn shaped mythology. One of the strongest sections of the book is the final 15 pages, where Armstrong depicts modern society in tatters due to its inability to formulate a coherent myth. This is an excellent overview of the subject, one that I'll return to.

Karen Armstrong is a terrific writer & I consider her the best religious writer of our time. She never preaches. Not biased. Just tells the facts as written over the ages. I have read most of her books. The best, I think, was "The Great Transformation." However I just finished reading "Fields of Blood-Religion and the History of Violence." This is an excellent read, indispensable for those who seek the meaning behind the global politics we have today. I recommend all of Armstrong's books to anyone interested in history, religion, politics, & the historical, religious figures of note. .

Just Weighing In

There are really enough reviews. Two comments to justify the four stars:

First the criticisms and comments below (above?): the greatest weakness in her book is that she offers her opinions and speculations as facts. They are not, they are something much higher. They are interpretations, often brilliant and well footnoted. The introduction left me cold and I disagree with some of the conclusions, especially in the last chapter. So what? We are different people. I agree that this should never be the only work you read about mythology. It might make a good introduction, if it is carefully explained that these are interpretations. Her failure to make this clear is a flaw.

Second, much of the speculation is brilliant, well argued, as supported by examples. She explains the role and nature of myth provocatively, in the best sense of the word, from her first chapter on the earliest myths to her last, which ends with a meditation on art, particularly modern fiction as a modern parallel to mythology.

Her writing is especially good and clear. Those who have found her writing too thick or two difficult should go back reading comic books.

Making no apologies for shattering stereotypes of the West and Westerners, Avedon said, "I'm looking for a new definition of a photographic portrait. I'm looking for people who are surprising—heartbreaking—or beautiful in a terrifying way. Beauty that might scare you to death until you acknowledge it as part of yourself."

Photographer Laura Wilson worked with Avedon during the six years he was making In the American West. In Avedon at Work, she presents a unique photographic record of his creation of this masterwork—the first time a major photographer has been documented in great depth over an extended period of time. She combines images she made during the photographic sessions with entries from her journal to show Avedon's working methods, his choice of subjects, his creative process, and even his experiments and failures. Also included are a number of Avedon's finished portraits, as well as his own comments and letters from some of the subjects.

Avedon at Work adds a new dimension to our understanding of one of the twentieth century's most significant series of portraits. For everyone interested in the creative process it confirms that, in Laura Wilson's words, "much as all these photographs may appear to be moments that just occurred, they are finally, in varying degrees, works of the imagination."

After seeing the show at the Amon Carter in Ft. Worth, and listening to an incredible talk given by a most knowlegable man there, I ordered three copies of the book. What appears at first to be simple shots of working people, becomes an insightful slice of peoples lives in the American west.

Brilliant behinds the scenes peek at the mind of a genius

I'm just beginning to really learn more about Avedon; one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. This book, written by Laura Wilson, a fellow photographer who travelled with Avedon around the west for one of his seminal works, offers a small peek into the mind of Avedon.

I must warn you that the insights deal with how Avedon approaches people - there is no technique, no discussion of lighting, nothing technical at all. For me, this is exactly what I wanted from the book. However, if you expecting any of these, you'll want to look elsewhere.

What this book does offer is a wonderful overview of the thoughts behind "In the American West". You begin to feel how Avedon approaches his subjects and how he connects to them. It also gives a feel for the final product came about from both an organic and a very well planned, envisioned if you will, composition.

Very useful and well worth the price

...Well, first of all, this book reveals a method of trading using only market-generated information - price action - no other input, including volume,
is needed. No forecasts, no guesses, no hocus-pocus mystery talk...
Secondly, I like the fact that he concentrates on producing high probability trades. I like to win - that's why I trade. ...BR> Thirdly, after reading his book, I honestly believe that I can use and successfully adapt my $.../Mo ... Basic subscription to building John's indicators into that online charting service so that I can profitably trade those Rydex index funds...I don't need the more expensive charting packages.
Fourthly, I believe him to be a man of integrity - this is of absolute importance to me. I believe this because (1) he is willing to share an eminently successful, crystal-clear, and
easy-to-implement trading strategy with the public, (2) his book not only includes examples of successful trades, but also trades that have not been successful, just like in real life (3) he goes
out of his way to ensure the reader's understanding of the concepts by clear and error-free text reference to charts, clear accurate definitions, appropriate examples, and repetition of past trading technics, and, finally (4) he has arranged his book to have all the necessary textbooklike qualities...including chapter reviews and an index (the "Putting It All Together" chapter is outstanding!) so as to ensure that his readers have every opportunity to learn. Let me say, considering the multitude of overpriced investment books I've bought in which I've found most of that structure lacking, I very much appreciated both the quality and clarity of John's writing throughout the entire book.
I am very happy with the book...I give it my highest recommendation.

Interesting, but system doesn't work well

Well, I enjoyed the book immensely, and liked the author's concept of the Directional Day Filter. Anyway, he bases his entire system on breakouts against the trend. Using my live market feed, I automated his rules to a letter via a homegrown app, and my losses mounted by the day. I implemented his definition of Support and Resistance, and whenever I broke through these levels, and the appropriate stochastic indicators indicated that I buy or sell, I would buy or sell short appropriately, and the stock would invariably reverse shortly thereafter. His mechanism was not reliable at all. To the contrary, you can get some good info from his book, and trade of support and resistance levels by themselves, reversing position when these respective levels are hit. This makes entirely more sense, and will allow you to profit consistently, contrary to what the author stipulates.

Mr.Clayburg has written a very imformative and helpful
book.His "Daily Directional Indicator" is something I've
never seen before and is quite unique.I have read numerous
books on trading and not one of them has ever touched
on a "trading tool" such as this.Chapter 10 is worth the price
of the book alone and possibly much more.I intend to use this
daily indicator in my own trading from now on to give me
a daily directional bias. I reccomend this book to all aspiring traders.

Excellent... very worth the Readers' time

"Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country”: The Native American Perspective edited by Frederick E. Hoxie and Jay T. Nelson

Being a “perspective”, this work naturally includes insights to be contemplated and bias to be criticized. The insights in this book are ample, important, thought-provoking, and deserve plenty of contemplation. The bias is chiefly the age-old “White equals Bad, Red equals Noble” bigotry and hypocrisy that has characterized the writings of Indians and their allies forever. That is to say it is “old news” and should be set aside in order to glean the most from the insights.

I’m certain the reader will agree that the editors have done an admirable job of cutting through the mythology of the Lewis & Clark expedition. In doing so, they have brought the reader to a vantage point that puts the expedition and its’ impact into “3-D”, so to speak. It’s like they’ve “IMAX’ed” the Corps of Discovery and its’ place in the real America of 1803-06. But I don’t want to spoil the fun… except, perhaps, to say this…

The editors seem to have undergone an epiphany of sorts – a realization of the unseen impact Red/White contact then, and since and now. They seem to sense that, in spite of its’ twisted, twining path over the passed century, the Life of the native peoples is still in them. They are still Themselves. The 21st chapter, titled “Language Preservation” recognizes Language as the soul of a People (“culture”, if you will) and comes closest to articulating that epiphany. In fact, the reader might do well to read that chapter first and then go back and read the book through. And, in fact, White readers might do very well to ponder whether all American citizens need to achieve a similar epiphany about our lives too. Our national government is doing many of the same things to all of us that it did to indigenous Americans in the 1900s, especially with regards to our children.

Smith's fans remain legion; her 1975 album Horses, a masterpiece, continues to influence and inspire. Her writings, appearing over the years following the band's '80s dormancy, have garnered a cult following not unlike that of Charles Bukowski. The press chat quotes the following from a poem called "The Long Road": "We broke our mother's heart and became ourselves./ We proceeded to breathe and therefore to leave,/ drunken startled beings, each of us a god." It's hard to imagine those lines in a book published by Ecco without Smith to back them up. Yet they do convey what can only be called Smith's mystique, and the book as whole effectively transmits the affect and aura, as well as the innocence, that make her a rock star: one believes in her. There are better lines and poems among the 24 short lyrics (along with the long, diffuse "Birds of Iraq"); the book certainly eclipses, say, Billy Corgan's recent Blinking with Fists. There are more polished books of poems by bandleaders (David Berman's Actual Air and Jeff Tweedy's Adult Head come to mind), but these poems allow access to a major artist's thoughts and preoccupations. Poetry is the foundation and soul of Smith's music, from her first revolutionary album, Horses (1975), on to Trampin' (2004). A mystic and a provocateur, a mendicant and a shaman, Smith has always celebrated her love of literature, including that of Blake and Rimbaud. Eternity In An Hour

Like the other reviewer, we went to see Patti Smith read from her new book on Sunday here in San Francisco, at the Victoria Theater where she went on as a benefit for the fabled Poetry Center at San Francisco State. She introduced AUGURIES OF INNOCENCE in a context very much about William Blake, who wrote a poem two hundred years ago with the same title:

Every morn and every night

Some are born to sweet delight.

Some are born to sweet delight,

Some are born to endless night.

Her book is all about the perils of childhood. One of the poems, "Fourteen," takes the facts and images of the recent Elizabeth Smart case (the Mormon girl kidnapped out of her home in Utah by a "family" of nuts) and recasts it in Blakean terms. Reading "Fourteen" Smith brought us right into a strange, familiar world of danger, even terror. We may not force our children to work until midnight in mills and factories here in the US, but indeed we do force children overseas to do exactly that. As she points out, in private life not much has improved for our children who continue to be exploited sexually and damaged while young.

The new book isn't all about tragedy however, and her reading of "The Long Road" brought smiles and innumerable, involuntary nmods of recognition. Dedicated to her brother and sister, "The Long Road" surveys the whole enchanted world of childhood, the pleasures as well as the tears. Childhood is an anarchic, contested site of adventure, it's the "Never-Never Land" of PETER PAN, and something happens when children bond together against the adult world, they discover an agency that bonds them together as a host of angels. It isn't always pretty, but it's vibrant, even when it's scary.

Another new poem she read related to her recent LP TRAMPIN. This was an elegy, written in Belfast, on the death of an Irish tramp she happened to read in the local newspapers. The poems are pretty much short ones, concentrated bursts of lyric. One poem I didn't think worked very well expanded the legend of the "Three Windows" in Rome, where Smith happened to be at St Peter's Square when the College of Cardinals was electing the new Pope in April. Jokingly she announced it was the end of her "Pope Trilogy," which began long ago (1978?) with her imaginary encounter with John Paul the First in "Wave."

We were delighted when she brought out her guitar and sang some of her songs as well, including "Beneath the Southern Cross," "Wave" of course, "Wing," "My Blakean Year," "Grateful" for Jerry Garcia, "Dancing Barefoot," "Ghost Dance," and "People have the Power" among others. Lenny was there too. In each case you could see Patti reaching back into her enormous catalogue to try to illuminate (casting a searching beam of light) the new poems of AUGURIES. It was an incredible experience, a "poetry reading" that lasted two hours and twenty minutes. When it was over we all of us pondered the mysteries of William Blake and Patti Smith. It is true of a society that it will be judged by how the weakest and smallest among us are treated:

A robin redbreast in a cage

Puts all heaven in a rage.

A dove-house filled with doves and pigeons

Shudders hell through all its regions.

A dog starved at his master's gate

Predicts the ruin of the state.

A horse misused upon the road

Calls to heaven for human blood.

Each outcry of the hunted hare

A fibre from the brain does tear.

I Think She's Lost Her Edge

I'm a huge Patti Smith fan from the late 70's forward. She was inspirational to me from the moment I heard her, late one night on the Vin Scelsa radio show, pouring forth her musical poetry with an intensity I'd never heard from any artist before. When I went off to college in 1977, I had the pleasure of witnessing a performance that was an event like nothing I'd encountered to that point.

SHE is responsible for everything that I began to listen to from that point forward musically - it opened me up to artists I probably would have missed otherwise.

And it stuck with me. I was hooked. I have the most worn copy of "Babel" you've ever seen - and even had her sign this dog-earred version a few years back during another book tour of hers. I have a signed (now framed) poster from a concert I was unable to go to because my mom was dying - a good friend brought it back for me - the short poem on it reflecting that time in my life in a way that still makes me sad, and hopeful each time I read it.

So, I was looking forward to this new collection. For me, I'm just not feeling it. I couldn't get into any of it - try as I might. It seems to be lacking the driving rhythms of earlier poems - the ones that just slipped off the tongue, with a life of their own. I got the references in nearly everything but in this book, I feel lost somewhere. And it isn't like I haven't kept up with her, I know about her losses, her loves, her life, etc.

Now, maybe I'm just not ready for it. This has happened to me before with other music and poetry which did not strike a chord with me until a year or so later. Maybe I'm just out of touch or too old now, or something else I can't put my finger on?

It really pains me to even write that I'm not enjoying this. Maybe, I'll be enlightened down the road but for now, I'd rather be reading her older works.

Saw Patti read last night in San Francisco

I highly recommend this book to anyone in love with words. I'll share a first hand experience with you, because I'm fortunate to live in a city where I could meet the beautiful poet in a small church off of Haight Street and listen to the splendor of her heart, which is what happened last night. When I awoke this morning the world was a better place for me because of it. Her words are here for us all. Birds of Iraq entranced everyone in that small church, as well as The Lovecrafter and The Oracle (inspired by the cherubs pictured on the cover). Then Mummer Love: "Once I awoke and I heard your voice. I caught bits of nature in truth, our whole natural world. I heard the dead. They were calling to me. I felt my powers. Yet I did not go out into the night. I did not go out into the world. I did not use my powers but I wrote what I wrote. My heart cries but my eyes are dry as a salt bed." Ah, my smithian year.
