Shauna Niequist is the author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine and Savor. She is married to Aaron, and they have two wild and silly and darling boys, Henry and Mac. They live outside Chicago, where Aaron leads The Practice and is recording a project called A New Liturgy. Shauna also writes for the Storyline Blog, and for IF:Table, she is a member of the Relevant podcast, and a guest teacher at her church. Shauna’s three great loves are her family, dinner parties, and books, and she believes that vulnerable storytelling, hard laughter, and cold pizza for breakfast can cure almost anything.

Good Message but Hard to Relate

I was drawn to Shauna Niequist's newest book, Present Over Perfect because its title seemed to indicate our current season. I quickly realized that Niequist's life and my life are vastly different. While I'm learning to live with a messy playroom, Niequist is finding balance by saying no to Big Opportunities and Flashy Job Offers. She's learning to settle in at home with a cup of tea and her family. Perhaps it's harder for someone with a lot of opportunities to say no and to find that balance. I'd imagine that the sparkle of recognition is tempting. In that sense, Niequist is open about her change in mindset and what that cost her family and her career.

However, as an average mom who doesn't have a Big Career to say no to, I had trouble relating. The big ideas were powerful but the details were privileged and narrow. Niequist leads an idyllic life: Vacations at a lake house, travel, tons of family support, the ability to reimagine her work-from-home job to more perfectly fit her family's needs. And I say this as a middle-class, educated woman of privilege. I wonder how people living paycheck-to-paycheck, without the ease of reinvention would relate to this message?

I tried to like it, I really did. But, I just could not relate. I don't have a 'spiritual advisor'. I can't just drop work projects. I didn't find any application for people who did not have her career.

My (blogger) cousin said it changed her life, so of course that caught my attention. I tried, I really did, kept thinking maybe the next page will offer something life changing. Nope, just the same song over and over. 1/2 way thru I stopped reading. I just could not take the boredom any longer. I honestly do not understand how this book got so many 5 star ratings.

In a Cambodian proverb, "when broken glass floats" is the time when evil triumphs over good. That time began for the Him family in 1975, when the Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia and they began their trek through the hell of the "killing fields". In a heart-wrenching memoir, Chanrithy Him vividly tells of her childhood, growing up in a Cambodia where rudimentary labour camps are the norm and technology, such as cars and electricity, no longer exitst. As she struggles to understand the suffering and violence around her, she shows proof of unbounded courage and great hope. Death becomes a companion at the camps, along with illness. Yet through the terror, Him's family remains loyal to one another despite the Khmer Rouge's demand of loyalty only to itself. Moments of inexpressible sacrifice and love lead them to bring what little food they have to the others, even at the risk of their own lives. In 1979, "broken glass" finally sinks. From a family of 12, only five of the Him children survive. They are desperate to escape the Khmer Rouge but sad to leave what they see as the empty shell of Cambodia. From refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines, sponsored by an uncle in Oregon, they begin new lives in America.

Chea answers only with a proverb: When good and evil are thrown together into the river of life, first the klok or squash (representing good) will sink, and the armbaeg or broken glass (representing evil) will float. But the broken glass, Chea assures her, never floats for long: "When good appears to lose, it is an opportunity for one to be patient, and become like God."

Before this proverb could come true, Chanrithy had to watch her mother, father, and five of her brothers and sisters die, murdered by the Khmer Rouge or fatally weakened by malnutrition, disease, and overwork. Now living in Oregon, where she studies posttraumatic stress disorder among Cambodian survivors, Chanrithy has written a first-person account of the killing fields that's remarkable for both its unflinching honesty and its refusal to despair. In wrenchingly immediate prose, she describes atrocities the rest of the world might prefer to ignore: her sick yet still breathing mother, thrown along with corpses into a well; a pregnant woman beaten to death with a spade, the baby struggling inside her; a sister impossibly swollen with edema, her starving body leaking fluid from the webbing between her toes.

The mind retreats from horrors like these--and yet what emerges most strongly from this memoir is the triumph of life. Chanrithy is determined to honor her pledge to the dying Chea, to study medicine so she can help others live. When Broken Glass Floats accomplishes the same goal in a different way. Born in Cambodia in 1965, Him lived from the age of three with the fear of war overflowing from neighboring Vietnam and suffered through the U.S.'s bombing of her native land. However, thanks to her loving and open-minded family, her outlook remained positive--until 1975, when the Khmer Rouge seized control and turned her world upside down. (According to a Cambodian proverb, "broken glass floats" when the world is unbalanced.) Armed with a nearly photographic memory, Him forcefully expresses the utter horror of life under the revolutionary regime. Evacuated from Phnom Penh and and shunted from villages to labor camps, her close-knit family of 12 was decimated: both parents were murdered, and five of her siblings starved or died from treatable illnesses. Meanwhile, the culture of local communities was destroyed and replaced with the simple desire to survive famine. Yet for all their suffering throughout these years, the surviving Hims remained loyal to one another, saving any extra food they collected and making dangerous trips to other camps to share it with weaker family members. Friendships were also formed at great risk, and small favors were exchanged. But by the end of the book, Him finds herself surprised when she encounters remnants of humanity in people, for she has learned to live by mistrusting, by relying on her own wits and strength. When the Khmer Rouge were overthrown, Him moved to a refugee camp in Thailand. Today she works with the Khmer Adolescent Project in Oregon. A beautifully-written testament to the human condition

A beautifully written, moving memorial. I have read both this book and Loung Ung's First They Killed My Father. As several readers have noted, Him was a few years older and that slight advantage in age gave her a more reflective response to her ordeal. Above all, Him is a lyrical writer and a sensitive observer of the vicissitudes of life, able to render gut-wrenching emotions with a simple description of a quiet moment shared between mother and son, sister and brother as they struggle to hang on at the edge between life and death. I thought I already knew quite a bit about the Khmer Rouge era but this memoir taught me a great deal, not only about history but about the human condition. Highly recommended, along with First They Killed My Father.

Appreciate Our Freedom

This true story was loaned to me by a woman at my school who was also from Cambodia. She also experienced the same events and could have written a similar story. I could see that she really wanted her co-teachers to read this and to understand the difference between freedom and communism of the worst degree. I didn't want to read this at first, but the story was well told, easy to read and worth the effort to understand how this evil government could happen in our day. I now have a deeper compassion for the Cambodian people, their desire for life and family and how little we appreciate our own gifts of health, good food, family vacations and all the riches that come with a fair and reasonable government. The decline from righteousness to selfishness is clear and the difference between free will and forced behavior tells an ancient cosmic truth about how love should govern all of us.
I hope everyone takes the time to prayerfully read this no matter what religion you are or are not--the awareness is essential. The sense of deep appreciation becomes unavoidable.

Engaging

Having traveled to Cambodia and been profoundly affected by my experience, I wanted to understand the collective psyche of these people more deeply. The people that I came into contact with during my travels did not talk about this period of time in their history, and seemed uncomfortable with questions about it. The writing is not technically superb, but the story is engaging, and helped me to understand the Cambodian people a lot better. One of the things that struck me while I was in Cambodia was how kind and affectionate and accepting everybody I met was toward me, a complete stranger, despite everything they had suffered very recently in their history. Reading Chanrithy's story helped me to understand that this part of Cambodian culture that the Khmer Rouge had attempted to stamp out persisted and survived and is alive and well today because it is such an integral part of their cultural identity, much like the Cambodian proverb that is the title of this book.

A great book on strength training for beginners and veterans alike. You don't need to be an exercise physiologist to understand it and yet the information is complete and extremely helpful for athletes and coaches at all levels

Great information, but too technical for the masses

The information presented was very solid, and obviously based on a lot of knowledge and research. However, it seems to me that the target audience for this book should be coaches and professionals. The average person may feel overwhelmed by all the data presented. Even your average gym rat who works out regularly may have a hard time applying the principles in this book to his or her lifting program.

Fairly good book

This book was a slight disappointment, wasn't as good as I expected. Contains good info anyway, and I found some interesting new pieces of info, but also some errors. Due to some errors I can't totally trust everything in this book, have to verify some things from other sources before I could trust them completely.

As an example, in "Injury prevention" section authors recommend including "trunk rotations against resistance" in training protocols (page 147). This is totally against scientific proof, according to scientific evidence this exercise should absolutely be EXCLUDED. Check this in Stuart McGill's book "Low back disorders- ..." and you will find the right kind of advice on injury prevention.

Same goes for the recommendation on page 145: "Persons at high risk of LBPS (low back pain syndrome) should perform sit-ups with the legs bent, as in this position the load on the spine is lighter and the effect on the abdominal wall is greater." This is old and erroneous information, the new scientific evidence proves that there is not a great difference in the load on the spine even if legs are bent. The pressure is again high and exactly from the injury prevention viewpoint there are superior rectus abdominis exercises. Once again, check for example above mentioned McGill's book for the scientific evidence and better recommendations.

For the above stated reasons, I can't totally trust this books information, especially the injury prevention section is clearly not updated to take into account the newer scientific evidence.

Udon's biggest artbook ever

[[VIDEOID:mo2YGDZBJNGBSI3]]UDON's Art of Capcom: Complete Edition is quite an artbook to behold. This is the largest artbook ever from Udon at 600 pages. Very impressive indeed.

The first thing to note is this is actually the compilation of two earlier artbooks from Udon, namely Udon's Art of Capcom (304 pages) released in 2007 and UDON's Art of Capcom 2 (284 pages) released in 2010. So if you have those two artbooks, you're going to see mostly duplicated artworks, and hence it's not going to be worth buying it again. If you don't have those two artbooks, then this is a great collection to get into Capcom art.

Unlike most of Udon's artbooks, this is a hardcover edition. The cover art is beautiful. Binding is great for a book this thick. The book looks and feels great overall. However, I feel that the paper is slightly thinner but not really a major issue. The reproduction quality is still top notch with good colours and sharpness.

The content in the book are arranged by the games, namely Street Fighter (342 pages), Darkstalkers (64 pages), Rival Schools (22 pages), World of Capcom (48 pages) and other game projects (119 pages). The edge of the pages are colour coded to these five sections.

The last section on other game projects is actually also based on the main games such as Street Fighter, Darkstalkers etc. The main difference is here the artworks aren't splash art pages but miscellaneous art like game sprites, ending cut scenes, environment art for the stages, comic panels based off the games, and other stuff.

So what's new?

Well, the new artworks are the ones created after 2010 when UDON's Art of Capcom 2 came out. It can be difficult to spot the new ones because artworks in the books are credited with the artist names and purpose but the year is usually left out. But from the few I know are new, they are the box art for Marvel vs Capcom 3 Collector's Edition, cover art for the hardcover limited editions artbooks, Marvel vs Capcom 2 promo art and storyboards, and a handful of others.

All in all, this is an amazing artbook. The art is fantastic and it's definitely value for money. Highly recommended.

If you're shipping this book out of USA, watch out for the additional weight surcharge just before you confirm your purchase. For overseas buyers, you might want to compare prices with your local bookstore and consider getting it locally, or get it from Book Depository where the shipping cost is included in the price.

Typical Udon Quality: Another Must-Have in the Collection!

This and the recently-released SF:25 present buyers with a conundrum. Should I purchase this if I already have an earlier entry into the book series?

For many people, this purchase is simple. If you do not own Udon’s Art Of Capcom or Udon’s Art Of Capcom 2, run, do not walk, and purchase this. This hardcover collection is almost 600 pages in length, is presented on high-quality paper and is an anthology of a decade of wonderful artwork. I’m so glad Udon was given the helm of so much Capcom artwork, as their output is among the best art the gaming world has ever seen. There’s no question this is a must-have in your collection if you are fond on Street Fighter or Capcom games. And for perspective, Street Fighter comprises about 350 of those 600 pages.

The paper is just like the original versions and is printed on a thinner stock than SF:25. The binding is great but loose enough to enjoy flipping through. Some books I own are too tight to open up without worry. Not this one.

I highly recommend this if you don’t own a prior book. However, some of us already have one of those aforementioned Udon collections. What to do?

I own the first Udon’s Art Of Capcom but failed to purchase the second and then it went out of print and became awfully costly. Having seen the second collection, I will admit I prefer the art quality of the first book, but without owning it, I purchased this Complete Edition day 1. I do not regret it.

The same would go if you already had the second book but not the first. Buy this. The amount of art included is incredible.

However, if you have both, there are several noteworthy additions (and just a few drawbacks). First, the good:

The Complete Edition has 75 pages of brand-new material, including nine 25th Anniversary pieces that appear in neither. Those are all great, new, never-before-seen pieces. All this new art was organized in proper order, with SF, Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, World Of Capcom and Game Projects sections. Also, this is a hardcover and getting the originals in hardcover were harder to find. This looks *great* on my bookshelf. And it’s huge too.

The downside: In only a handful of cases, the art presented in the original books has been shrunk down. What was a pair of images on a page originally now is four in the Complete Edition. Very few times was this done. Also, the original first book had a Cover Illustration Tutorial about how it was made in Photoshop. This does not carry over. Also absent is the tribute art commentary of the originals. Each had a new piece with the artist’s comments on inspiration and technique. These are lost. I quite liked those (like the details in Darkstalkers: Official Complete Works) but they aren’t here. While that’s a drawback, no art is missing from this edition.

There is almost no question you need this in your library. The only reason to avoid this is if you have both Udon books already. While I think the first was superior in quality and content, the second had some amazing artwork and the Complete Edition’s layout, presentation, paper, binding and overall quality is typical Udon: top-notch. It’s nice feeling your dollars are going towards something you love and when that love is returned in such a high-caliber, glorious presentation.

As well tell you right now, UDON's Art of Capcom: Complete Edition is surely one of the most beautiful art book of 2014 for several reasons.

First Udon has finally understood that art books are better with a hard cover. The problem with art books from the publisher Udon was its soft covers and also that the pages were stuck together. Unfortunately, after some time, they were taking off, which is not the case here because they are connected. So the first good point!

Second, the quality of the illustrations, in 10 years, has seen in Udon artists, and it is not less than 70 illustrators who are gathered here. It was enough to make us less an awesome 600-page artbook! I still can not 600 pages, in fact I thought the artbook would be a huge pile, but as the paper is thin enough without tearing when you turn the page, do not worry, we have an artbook of reasonable size that will not drop your shelf Swedish woods!

Great news but content in this! Well in the book UDON's Art of Capcom: Complete Edition, are together the two artbooks UDON's Art of Capcom Vol 1 and 2, plus a few new illustrations. Which is great because these 2 artbooks have not been reissued, and those who missed out, do not need to spend more than 100 dollars for dishonest sellers to get them.

As Udon did a lot of comics on the Street Fighter saga, more than half of the artbook, or 350 out of 600 pages devoted to it. All have their personal pages of glory, no problem with that. After we Darkstalker, Rival School, artworks with a mixture of different worlds ... Btw Pages are different colors depending on software treaties, to easily find them.

In short this artbook is really excellent, and with 600 pages (yes you must have known, given the number of times I've said), you'll have enough to leaf through. Same with 600 pages there is much to say and as I had problem to choose photo after photo to illustrate this criticism. If I put listened, there would be at least a hundred. So as usual with Doktor-Artbook, here's a video that will show you that this artbook is really excellent.

And if I were you, I would order quickly, because it is certain that in some time it will sell double the price!

Interesting characters arrive at differing points of their journey, bringing depth to the various interweaving story lines, while the cluster of friendships spread outward, bringing other members into the clique and along for the ride.

There is plenty of sex, for those that are merely looking for that. But there is more here under the surface, for those that prefer a bit more substance.

One of the nicer pleasant surprises that develops is the shift in structure that finds us hearing segments of subplots via the voices of different characters. Almost like mini “Rashomon” moments, that give a heightened breadth to the intersecting character arcs.

I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment of these erotic-themed escapades and look forward to their continued adventures.

First but not the last i'll ever read.

I've never been one to really erotic novels, but I must say this has both taste and raw appeal to it. It really grips you and pulls you into the story line no matter what type of man you are into. Every time you try and put it down you end up wanted to see what the next chapter has in store. It's really a must read.

An exciting read from beginning to end. Had a hard time putting it down. Bix certainly writes in a way that pushed every one of my buttons.

Amazing music, perfect transcriptions

Not much to say. This album is definitely one of DT's best, and this book lives up to the high standard of the previous albums' transcriptions. Amazon offers the lowest price by far -- so what are you waiting for?

bought it for my brother in law

he loves it a lot, but i haven't heard him play any yet! I don't know any of the songs from this book so I can't say much about it, but if you play guitar and love this music, go for it! it came pretty fast as well!

Accuracy in the transcriptions in this book!

Very accurate tabs! I have gone though a lot of the songs and feel very confident that these tabs are spot-on. As a 24 year veteran of technical guitar playing, I would highly recommend this book. As a sidenote, I also have the Keyboard version of this book, and that one is just as good!
