Bennett, on the Gothic Language

This 190 page hardcover edition is a fine supplement to the classical works by Wright and Streitberg. Professor Bennett (born in 1907, and long associated with Notre Dame)is eminently qualified for such a work.
The work nicely intergrates Gothic within its Indo-European framework, displaying and commenting upon the relationships.
As an expert within the disapline of general Indo-European linguistics, the reader will note a healty dosage of modern linguistic terms and concepts.
The book is laid out into 28 chapters, each covering some aspect of the language (grammar, phonetics, historical aspects etc.)and each has some concluding exercises. [No answers are provided in a supplementary work (apparently), the user seeks out the answer in the work]. It is thus a book useful for classroom purposes. It has a fine 42 page Gothic-English dictionary, and a good bibliography. It also has a proper (though brief) index.
The various languages used in the text are clearly transliterated, and the type and layout is clutter-free. One objection I have is that he does not show his precise transliteration scheme for the IE (or PIE) words or for the Greek words, it appears that he is assuming that the instructor and student are familiar with his (or a standard?) scheme. As an expert with the Germanic languages he displays his adeptness here, perhaps too much so, as he seems to focus a bit heavily upon the Germanic/Latin angle as opposed to the German/IE/Greek aspects. But this may be just my bias.
The hardcover edition has 3 facsimiles of Gothic MSS, one of which is very unreadable (none on glossy paper). Bennett gives some room for discussion about the surviving texts. The hardbound edition is well made, it is smyth-sewn, no statements are made regarding the quality of the paper, but it feels acid-free.
All-in-all, a fine work, highly recommended for all students of this fine ancient language, and important for Biblical scholars as well who desire (or need) to access an early text of the NT. This grammar can get you up and running. A good book well worth $32.00.

Gets you reading Gothic right away

An excellent and quite painless way to learn Gothic. Its biggest virtue lies in its organization. It's not a textbook, but it's definitely not a dry, dusty grammar like Joseph Wright's books (which, btw, are very useful books; they're just not the cover-to-cover type). The best thing about the book's layout is: it gets you reading Gothic right away! From the beginning, each chapter has:

1. a reading in Gothic (from Scripture generally, since practically all extant texts are of Wulfila's translation of the Bible);

2. all the vocab you need to understand it;

3. a manageable-sized description of some piece of grammar (say, a couple of classes of nouns here, a few more the next chapter) with exercises to help you drill yourself on them; and

4. some other information.

These last sections range from an easy-to-read discussion about Indo-European to the place of Gothic within the Germanic language family, to a brief history of the Gothic tribes, to (later) discussions about phonetics and morphology that are more technical, not b/c of their writing style but simply b/c they're packed with information. These stem from the book's expressed purpose of presenting Gothic not only as easily as possible for the learner, but in the context of comparative Germanics and comparative linguistics generally.

If you're not into comparative linguistics, you can ignore these parts and still learn the language with relative speed. It's a very versatile book. A decent amount of effort on each chapter of this book will amaze you with how soon you can read Gothic texts. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Janet Gonzalez-Mena started her early childhood career in a cooperative preschool as a parent volunteer back in 1966. She then became a Head Start volunteer and ended up as a teacher in a preschool for Spanish-speaking children and their families in 1970’s. She has also helped open several pilot programs including a therapeutic child care program and a home-based bilingual preschool program. When Magda Gerber came into her life in the mid-1970’s, Janet signed up for an internship with her at the Children’s Health Council in Menlo Park, California. As a result of that experience, later, when she became a child care director, she was able to incorporate much of what she learned into her work and was influential in expanding that program to include an infant center. Training and teaching adults has always been sideline, even when she was working with children and families. She worked as a Head Start trainer and as adjunct faculty in 4 community colleges plus the University of California Santa Cruz credential extension program. She taught for 15 years as full time faculty at Napa Valley College in the Child and Family Studies Program. Since 1991, she has been part of the faculty for WestEd’s Program for Infant-Toddler Caregivers (PITC) Training of Trainer Institutes. Janet has been writing along with teaching for all these years and is author of numerous articles and 13 books related to early childhood, including Foundations of Early Childhood Education; Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers (with co-author Dianne Eyer); and Diversity in Early Care and Education: Honoring Differences (Formerly Multicultural Issues in Child Care). She wrote Dragon Mom about herself as parent to help early childhood professionals alleviate guilt when their parenting doesn't live up to their high standards. Her latest passion is understanding more about the Pikler Institute in Budapest, Hungary, where Magda Gerber came from. It took her 30 years to get there after she first heard of it, but her first trip to it in November of 2003 merely whetted her appetite. She has made two more since and is planning for another one. She is fascinated by the approach and is convinced that this residential nursery is a model for the world. She is continuing to learn more about how this approach can be used to improve infant-toddler care and education programs in the United States. She is also working with a group in Mexico to explore how the approach might fit into their models of residential care for infants and toddlers. Janet has a Master of Arts Degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks in Pasadena, California.

Tenured Professor of Early Childhood Education / Child Development at Canada College since 1970, Department Coordinator since 1978 (and author of 30 courses within the ECE/CD Department). Dianne has served on various college committees during the last few years including the Articulation Self Study Committee and the Chairperson for the College Council from 2002 to 2004. She received specialized diversity training under Title V in 2002. In the late 1990’s she was a presenter at the Annual Conference of the National Association for the Education of Young Children in Atlanta, GA and Washington D.C. respectively. She is the co-author of Infants, Toddlers and Caregivers, sixth edition, McGraw-Hill, released in 2004. Her community experiences include: Task Force member for the Advancing Careers in Child Development Project (Pacific Oaks College, Pasadena CA); San Mateo County Consortium for Quality Programs; SMC Partnership Council; and membership in SMAEYC. She has been responsible for several grants within the ECE/CD Department including: Foster Care Education, SAFE START/Violence Intervention in ECE (Centers for Disease Control); and the Family Support Program (a PSP and The Council collaboration). She is currently coordinating a grant with First 5 San Mateo County to recruit and retain quality ECE/CD teachers and providers in the field. She is also a Professional Growth Advisor for the Child Development Permit.

It's All About Magda

I'm sure most people will order this book because it is required for a college course, but regardless of the reason you order it - be forewarned. This book is not about infant and toddler development - it's about Magda Gerber (and of course Emmi Pickler and Anna Tardos). Gerber was of course one of the most heavily influential early childhood researchers and educators of our time, but she was not the only one and I don't think RIE is the only method of child rearing that should be taught- particularly to students in any Early Childhood department. I felt cheated by this textbook for only exploring one person's ideas about early childhood development, and I was turned off by its tone. The book is almost laughably judgmental (I shouldn't say almost- I literally laughed multiple times) of other forms of child rearing and ideas about child development and it never questions even one of Gerber's ideas or explores any of the ideas of other important early childhood researchers. I think it is extremely important for early childhood educators to study Gerber, but the authors should be clear that she is the subject of this book, not infant and toddler development.

Very pretty items but hard to find accessory kits

The Tilda books are laid out so nicely, with really cute items. Only problem is, it's impossible to find the kits like her doll face-painting kit which isn't sold in the USA. I finally ordered the catalog from Panduro Hobby, since it's coming from the UK it took about a month. Wasn't sure if my request went through because of the "county" and "city" and being not USA it fills out these fields differently, but it finally got here. So I guess I'm saying great book, great ideas and love the patterns included, but you may need to look elsewhere for the fabric or paint kits to duplicate the look on your own.

I love the photos in this book and the ideas are precious. The Tilda doll is soooo cute and I loved the thought of making her. However, I have sewn for many years and find the directions hard to follow. I don't see how anyone new to sewing could possibly take on this project without giving up. I hope that in the future, sewing directions and pictures will be clearer.

Not really impressed

I love Tilda's books, but I do have to say I expected a little more. Even though it has great colorful photos, there are a lot less projects in this book than what I expected. What you see on the front page is pretty much the content of the book plus a few extra printables.
I don't like the pages of this book since it's an unfinished paper/cardboard type bind. I like a little sheen on my pages (makes it less likely to tear or get dirty).

When you are ready to dig deeper into the ramifications of the web in our world

I enjoyed Nicco Mele's important book very much, but not because of the frequently discussed details about how the Web allows anyone to publish and be seen. No, that's obvious. Instead what I particularly liked was his deep dive into less obvious ramifications and the cautionary aspects of the erosion of power structures.

Big is the New York Times book review. The end of big is you reading my book review on the book's Amazon page. As Nicco writes: "The end of big replaces the elite, formal, highly capitalized, institutionally backed provider of goods or services with your neighbor the poet / journalist / lawyer / soldier / designer (insert craft here)."

Nicco certainly knows what he's talking about. As webmaster for Governor Howard Dean's 2004 presidential bid, Nicco and the campaign team popularized the use of technology and social media, revolutionizing political fundraising and reshaping American politics. Soon after, he co-founded EchoDitto, a web strategy firm whose clients included Barack Obama's successful Senate campaign. Nicco is now also on the faculty at the Harvard Kennedy School where he teaches graduate-level classes on the internet and politics.

While there are many exciting aspects of the end of big in every area Nicco covers, in each there are also threats. For example, in journalism, if we no longer have big news gathering organizations, who is going to fund the big investigative story? Without the Washington Post, would Woodward and Bernstein have emerged independently? Without the Watergate Scandal how would history have differed? These are questions worth asking.

What I find particularly interesting about our culture today is that big is not going away. We are all struggling to figure out which big institutions make sense in our lives today and in our future world. And we're trying to figure out which are best torn down.

For example, I note that The End of Big was not self-published. Nicco talks a lot about micro publishing but went with a big publisher (St. Martin's Press) for his own book.

But at the same time, Nicco is running EchoDitto his own small business and he also has a small publishing operation (his blog). He's someone who used small techniques (on the Web) to make both Howard Dean and Barack Obama very big.

Smart analysis of some troubling issues ahead

Nicco Mele adeptly points out that the collapse of large institutions (from news to government to publishing) brings with it some serious concerns about the future. This book is a greater primer for the discussion we'll be having over the next decade: now that these large institutions are gone, what responsibility to the replacements (Facebook, Google, Apple, etc.) have in filling the voids left behind? How can we keep the new institutions accountable and how can we do better than what we had before? Must read.

David Millan Escriva

David Millan Escriva was eight years old when he wrote his first program on an 8086 PC with BASIC language, which enabled the 2D plotting of BASIC equations. He started with his computer development relationship and created many applications and games. In 2005, he completed his studies in IT from the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia with honors in human-computer interaction supported by Computer Vision with OpenCV (v0.96). He had a final project based on this subject and published it on HCI Spanish Congress. In 2014, he completed his Master's degree in artificial intelligence, computer graphics, and pattern recognition, focusing on pattern recognition and Computer Vision. He participated in Blender source code, an open source and 3D-software project, and worked in his first commercial movie, Plumiferos―Aventuras voladoras, as a computer graphics software developer. David now has more than 13 years of experience in IT, with more than nine years of experience in Computer Vision, computer graphics, and pattern recognition, working on different projects and start-ups, applying his knowledge of Computer Vision, optical character recognition, and augmented reality. This book was first published in 1984, and it has been in the field for the last eighteen years. The microprocessor concepts that were at the cutting edge of the technology in the 1970s and '80s have become fundamentals of the computer field. It is gratifying to see such acceptance of the integrated approach to teaching microprocessor concepts. The text is intended for introductory microprocessor courses at the undergraduate level in technology and engineering. It is a comprehensive treatment of the microprocessor, covering both hardware and software based on the 8085 microprocessor family. The text assumes a course in digital logic as a prerequisite; however, it does not assume any background in programming. At the outset, though; we need to answer the following three critical questions.

1. In the early years of the twenty-first century, is an 8-bit microprocessor an appropriate device through which to teach microprocessor concepts when 32- and 64-bit microprocessors are readily available? If we consider the worldwide sales volume of microprocessor chips, the answer is a resounding yes: 8-bit microprocessors (including single-chip microcontrollers) account for more than 90 percent of the total. The 8-bit microprocessor has already established its market in the areas of industrial control, such as machine control, process control, instrumentation, and consumer appliances; these systems that include a microprocessor are known as embedded systems or microprocessor-based products. The recent 32- and 64-bit microprocessors are used primarily in microcomputers and workstations; they are so powerful that their applications are better suited to such tasks as high-speed data processing, CAD/CAM, multitasking, and multiuser systems. The 32- or 64-bit microprocessors are less likely to replace 8-bit microprocessors in industrial control applications.

From the teaching point of view, we are interested in teaching the basic concepts underlying a programmable device, such as buses, machine cycles, various processes of data flow (parallel, serial, interrupts, and DMA), internal register architecture, programming, and interfacing. A general-purpose 8-bit microprocessor is an ideal device to teach these concepts, especially in a rapidly changing technological environment. When students master the basic concepts, they will be able to apply those concepts in such an environment, whether it is based on a microcontroller, an 8-bit processor with a different set of instructions, or a 64-bit processor.

2. Why shouldn't we focus on the Intel high-end 32- or 64-bit processors when PCs (personal computers) are commonly available in college laboratories? This is similar to asking why shouldn't we use LSI devices to teach basic logic concepts of AND, NAND, and OR. To teach basic concepts, we need a simple processor with an adequate instruction set. The Intel high-end processors are too difficult to comprehend at the introductory level because of their complex architecture and large instruction set. They are suitable for high-level languages and handling large databases and graphics. These processors are used primarily in PCs and network servers.

3. Why teach the 8085 microprocessor? This question has several answers. One is that any 8-bit microprocessor that is commonly available will meet the teaching criteria, and another is that the 8085 is one of the most widely used microprocessors in college laboratories. It has simple architecture and an adequate instruction set that enable instructors to teach necessary programming concepts. It is inconsequential which microprocessor is selected as the focus; the concepts are easily transferable from one device to another. Having learned basic concepts with the 8085 microprocessor, students can adapt to the microcontroller environment (such as the Intel 8051 or Motorola 68HC 11) or to the PC environment. Furthermore, peripheral devices (such as the 8255A, 8254, and 8259) are commonly used in the PC environment. One can argue for a microcontroller as a basis for an introductory course. However, the experience, of many institutions suggest that a microcontroller is an appropriate device for a higher-level course; at an introductory level, the pedagogy becomes quite cumbersome. Furthermore, general-purpose 8-bit processors are now being used in small systems such as graphic calculators, coffee machines, home appliances, and serving web pages over a TCP/IP network.

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH AND TEXT ORGANIZATION

The microprocessor is a general-purpose programmable logic device. A thorough understanding of the microprocessor demands concepts and skills from two different disciplines: hardware concepts from electronics and programming skills from computer science. Hardware is the physical structure of the microprocessor, and the programming makes it come alive; one without the other is meaningless. Therefore, this text presents an integrated approach to hardware and software in the context of the 8085 microprocessor. Part I focuses on the microprocessor architecture, the 8085 instruction set, and interfacing; Part II introduces programming; and Part III integrates hardware and software concepts from the earlier sections in interfacing and designing microprocessor-based products. Each topic is covered in depth from basic concepts to industrial applications and is illustrated by numerous examples with complete schematics. The material is supported with assignments of practical applications.

Part I has five chapters dealing with the hardware aspects of the microcomputer as a system, presented with the spiral approach that is similar to the view from an airplane that is getting ready to land. As the plane circles around, what one observes is a view without any details. As the plane starts descending, one begins to see more details. This approach is preferable because students need to use a microcomputer as a system in their laboratory work in the early stages of a course, without having an understanding of all aspects of the system. Chapter 1 presents an overview of microprocessor-based systems with an illustration of a microprocessor-controlled temperature system (MCTS). It presents the 8-bit microprocessor as a programmable device and an embedded controller, rather than a computing device or CPU used in computers. Chapter 2 introduces the instruction set of the 8085 processor. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 examine microprocessor architecture, memory, and I/O, with each chapter having increasing depth-from registers to instruction timing and interfacing.

Part II has six chapters dealing with 8085 instructions, programming techniques, program development, and software development systems. The contents are presented in a step-by-step format. A few instructions that can perform a simple task are selected. Each instruction is described fully with illustrations of its operations and its effects on the selected flags. Then these instructions are used in writing programs, accompanied by programming techniques and troubleshooting hints. Each illustrative program begins with a problem statement, provides the analysis of the problem, illustrates the program, and explains the programming steps. The chapters conclude with reviews of all the instructions discussed. The contents of Part II are presented in such a way that, in a course with heavy emphasis on hardware, students can teach themselves assembly language programming if necessary.

Part III synthesizes the hardware concepts of Part I and the software techniques of Part II. It deals with the interfacing of I/Os, with numerous industrial and practical examples. Each illustration analyzes the hardware, includes software, and describes how hardware and software work together to accomplish given objectives. Chapters 12 through 16 include various types of data transfer between the microprocessor and its peripherals such as interrupts, interfacing of data converters, I/O with handshake signals using programmable devices, and serial I/O. Chapter 14 discusses special-purpose programmable devices used primarily with the 8085 systems (such as the 8155), while Chapter 15 discusses general-purpose programmable devices (such as the 8255A, 8254, 8259, and 8237). Chapter 17 deals primarily with the project design of a single-board microcomputer that brings together all the concepts discussed in the text. Chapter 18 discusses trends in microprocessor technology ranging from recent microcontrollers to the latest general-purpose 32- and 64-bit microprocessors.

NEW AND IMPROVED FEATURES IN THE FIFTH EDITION

The fifth edition preserves the focus as described and includes the following changes and additions, suggested by reviewers and by faculty who have used the book in their classrooms:

Chapter 1 is revised to include the most recent technological changes and introduces a block diagram of the microprocessor-controlled temperature system (MCTS).

Stay away from 5th Edition

BAD BOOK! Not necessarily the material (although as previous reviews have correctly noted, it's no 5 star), but I would like to address the 5th Edition, hard back BOOK published by Prentice-Hall. My book has publishing errors & is poorly constructed. For example, Appendix G, which is solutions to select problems, is apparently the answers for an earlier edition - they make no sense. The book's binding is falling apart. I've had to glue mine up in order to hold it together. Now this is a new, $100+, hard back, text book! I contacted the local Prentice-Hall Rep. for my school 3 weeks ago & still no help. Save your $ on this 5th edition, if you have any other options, until Prentice-Hall corrects their quality control publishing problems (& until they "step up to the plate" & correct problems when they've goofed!).

Excellent for learning Microprocessor basics

I had read this book page by page during the semestre of Computer Architecture course in 1986, but it is even more useful today. Because the book explains every concept on microprocessor with the help of 8085 which is very simple to understand. In addition ,if you have Microprocessor experimental kit (8085 of course) then it is really easy to get the whole basic principles about microprocessors, structure, programming, peripherals and so on. Every EE student who is interested in microprocessors, should read this book and do the lab exercises with an experimental kit. Thanks Gaonkar for this excellent work.

Good, but not structured properly; lacks detail

The book is good but only if you're gonna use it in conjunction with class notes or if you want to read it twice. The content (just the 8085 processor) is good. Everything is well explained. The structuring of the book isn't too great. You'll run into the same thing at three different places and all explained at different details. So it gets irritating at times. Also, the level of detail about the peripheral chips (even for the standard chips - only one has been explained in length, the others just find a mention) isn't too great. Maybe Gaonkar assumed that one would have access to the Intel manuals. I don't know how it works with the other books on this topic, but this book isn't exactly 'the' reference book for somebody working with the 8085, because you'd have to keep using other books or Intel manuals .
