One of the best design tools out there.

This book is wonderfully written and easily understood by those directly and indirectly involved with interior design and architecture. The author, Toby Israel, leads you through her pioneering ideas behind design psychology with an interesting format that includes narration, interviews and exercises. You'll discover how your own past history of place - where you grew up, the type of home you lived in and even where you went to school - can affect choices you make regarding dwellings and workplaces now and in your future.
The exercises throughout the book help readers uncover influences from their past and can help them create successful environments for themselves or for clients. This book is a must have for anyone seeking to create satisfying designs with tools we inherently possess but too often ignore.

Questionable concept but read the book anyway.

I'm rarely uncertain about my reviews but I am with this one. I've gone through Toby's recommended process of discovery and I think it is partially valid but either incomplete or on the wrong track. Her questionnaires and analysis of past experiences with "home" are the basis of her theory and book.

From Martin Seligman's Authentic Happiness "It is difficult to find even small effects of childhood events on adult personality, and there is no evidence at all of large effects." (I happen to be reading this article with this quote, I haven't read the book yet: [...])

I just don't see a childhood environment influence in my design preferences. I suspect that we are influenced much more by what we are exposed to that we remember. If a child sees a dome in a house and happens to remember 30 years later that a dome can be used in a house design then that designer is more likely to use a dome. My understanding of Toby's theory is that the designer would use a dome feature if they had a happy environment with a dome in the home in their previous experience. I see this as more coincidental than part of the psychological make-up of the designer.

I grew up in an old California mining town and my parent's house had bats in the attic. The bats were amusing but I don't recall the urge to design my homes with accomodations for bats.

An Amazon review is no place to get into a full academic discussion but I believe I've seen enough decent research that works against her theory and that my personal experience combined with her approach does not work at all. It would take a book to refute her theory properly but at least don't accept it without question.

What value has this book, theory, and process to architectural and interior design? I found that the insight into the thinking and histories of the three superb architects she interviews was worth my time and money. Also, her process should work at least some of the time, and possibly more often than not. It can't hurt to know the client better and her technique is not burdensome.

I recommend reading the book if you are doing design and want another theoretical reference point.

A Solid Book-inspiring and well written

"Some Place Like Home" is a groundbreaking book for the field of Design Psychology. As an Interior Design student I realize that my study is constantly subordinate to the field of Environmental Psychology and the two are interrelated. Dr. Israel is a pioneer of this field and I would recommend her work to anyone wanting to further their understanding of this discipline. She is dead on when she states, " The idea of environmental autobiography has been around for a long time, so has environmental psychology. Unfortunately these ideas have not been effectively communicated to the public at large, or to architects. Perhaps this book will help convince people that there is a powerful connection between past, present and future sense of home and place and that this connection can be explored through...Design Psychology."

"I would take it a step further and say that it might be as good or even better than being there in the OR, watching the surgeon perform each procedure. Why? Because the videos are well edited, the view and the lighting are excellent, the procedures are accelerated through the repetitive steps such as suturing and cautering, the important points are highlighted, and the voice-over is clear, unhurried and undistracted by the actual operation."

About the Author

Paul G. Keat has been a member of the Global Business Faculty at Thunderbird School of Global Management for the past twenty-five years. At present he is an Associate Professor Emeritus. Prior to his coming to Thunderbird, he was associated for many years with the International Business Machines Corporation in professional and managerial capacities.

�

His education includes a B.B.A. in accounting from the Baruch School of the City University of New York, an M.A. from Washington University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago.

�

Dr. Keat began his IBM career in the department of economic research and then moved into the long-range planning area. Later, as a member of the finance function, he spent several years at IBM’s European headquarters in Paris, as manager in the financial planning area and then as the financial manager for the company’s European software business. After his return to the United States, Dr. Keat served as manager in the pricing area of one of the company’s manufacturing groups. Before leaving IBM in 1987, he was associated with the company’s International Finance, Planning and Administration School (IFPA), where he taught managerial economics, lectured on finance in a number of company-related courses, and managed academic courses. He also taught at IBM’s IFPA School at La Hulpe, Belgium.

Dr. Keat has taught at several U.S. universities, including Washington University, the City University of New York (CUNY), and Iona College. He was an adjunct professor of finance at the Lubin Graduate School of Business at Pace University, and he also taught in Pace University’s Executive MBA program.

Philip K. Y. Young (www.philipkyoung.com) is the founder and president of Nth Degree Systems, Inc., a consulting firm that provides customized education and training programs to major corporations around the world. He recently co-founded Learning Burst Academy (www.learningbursts.com), a company that produces courses in business education in an innovative, digital format. He is also a member of the global faculty network of Duke Corporate Education. He has thirty years of teaching experience as a professor of economics in MBA programs and over twenty-five years of experience developing and teaching customized education and training programs.

Most of Dr. Young’s teaching career was spent in the Lubin School of Business at Pace University in New York, followed by several years as clinical professor of management at Thunderbird School of Global Management. His list of clients includes a number of multinational corporations in industries such as information technology, telecommunications, fast-moving packaged consumer goods, consulting services, advertising and public relations, pharmaceuticals, semiconductor manufacturing and design, diversified manufacturing, and financial services. He teaches for these companies in the United States, Latin America, western and central Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Dr. Young received a B.A. from the University of Hawaii, a master’s degree in international relations from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in economics from New York University.

Stephen E. Erfle began his career as a managerial economist during a 1994—1995 sabbatical at Seagram Classics Wine Company (SCWC). During those fourteen months, he maintained offices at Sterling Vineyards and at Mumm Cuv�e Napa, where, respectively, the finance and marketing departments of SCWC resided. Trained as a microeconomic theorist, he began to use his economist’s toolkit to analyze concrete business questions, such as, Should Mumm raise the price of Brut Prestige a dollar a bottle? When does it make sense to have another tasting room associate on the floor in Sterling’s tasting room?

On returning to Dickinson College, Dr. Erfle decided to refocus his teaching in a more applied direction. He helped found the International Business and Management department and major during the late 1990s. One of the core courses in that major is his course, Managerial Economics, which uses Excel as a teaching platform. This course is modeled after what he did during his SCWC sabbatical. In the past fifteen years, he has taught more than a thousand undergraduates how to build economic models in order to do comparative statics analysis and how to do regression modeling in Excel.

Dr. Erfle received a B.S. in mathematics and B.A. in economics from the University of California, Davis, and a master’s and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. He has also taught in the Economics Department at Dickinson College and in the School of Social Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. He is also involved in wine education; he has taught wine-tasting classes and conducted wine tastings since his graduate school days as the resident economics and wine tutor for Harvard’s Leverett House.

As an MBA instructor, this was a TERRIBLE choice for both myself and my students.

Though I chose this text because of the international and policy/growth focus at the end, it failed. Wordy, unclear, badly organized with examples that actually don't lead the students through a story that helps with learning. It tries to illustrate without math, but then throws it in there in a seemingly random pattern.

I ended up chucking the thing and just writing up my own notes and had the students print them instead.

I haven't had a single student who said that this helped them in the learning process, and I must say that I'll be switching to a different text next term.

It's unfortunate, as I had heard good things from others in the past about this text; to be honest, I am unsure why those good comments had occurred.

A tough read

I just completed a graduate level managerial economics course with this textbook. Unfortunately, we had to read 12 chapters in this book. It was a tough read that required rereading to grasp all of the concepts thoroughly. The professor often assigned videos to watch in an effort to help everyone better understand the material since the textbook was a tough read. With that said, how many economics textbooks are easy reads? None that I have used in the past.

Poorly written and confusing

I think this textbook is very poorly written. I dread reading it because it jumps all over the place, it isn't clearly written and it includes a bunch of mathematical equations that are completely unnecessary. I don't need the proofs of an equation, just give me the one I need.

L'histoire est éternelle. La cadette de trois soeurs, belle, douce, honnête, travaillante, se sacrifie pour sa famille. La bête, sous des dehors repoussants, l'entoure de soins.La Belle finit par aimer la bête pour ses qualités cachées et le délivre d'un mauvais sort.

Les contes sont écrits pour leur morale. Ici, dans un texte très court, les pistes de réflexion sont nombreuses et restent modernes : sacrifice personnel pour le bien commun, laideur apparente contre force de caractère, source du vrai bonheur en couple etc.

A great story in a nice gentle read

This is a terrific way to get a top flight fairy tale to read to your kids. The illustrations are terrific, and the text gets you back to the pre-Disney story. The passions and obsessions that boil under the simple classical language are skillfully pulled toward the radiant moral conclusion. If the tale is to your liking, you might try to find the movie by Jean Cocteau. Both make rare and beautiful experiences for a family setting.
