Hopper: Changing things up

Often we think of iconic American pioneers as beneficiaries of unimaginable intellectual gifts that are the sole reason for a person's achievement. You would think this is particularly so of Grace Murray Hopper, the woman who pioneered the modern era of computer science. Among many, many brilliant technical achievements (realizing computers could do more than just add and subtract numbers - and then figuring out how to make them do more) she will be familiar to laymen as the creator of COBOL the first modern programming language that elegantly programmed the computing machines in natural language, using English, instead of numbers.
Her revealing portrait and absorbing oral biography from the Women of Wisdom Series excerpted from Particular Passions: Talks with Women Who Have Shaped our Times shows us otherwise. What is so exceptional about this biography is that it was crafted all from her own words, first person and you can really hear her speaking and feel her personality!
Murray Hopper had great intelligence, but intelligence is too narrow a lens to understand her productivity and achievements. She had insatiable curiosity, to find the problem on the other side of the solved problem. But most important to other women to know is that she had innate tremendous, tremendous confidence. It didn't really seem extraordinary to her to be a math and physics wonder at the top Ivy League schools in the late twenties and early thirties. Or as she states matter of factly to be better than men at this new thing computer programming: women are better at men in computer programming because they like to finish things.
She advocated kicking people in the pants or just stirring them up so they would take risks to come up with new solutions. I loved her thoughts on 'change' per se: that you needed a lot of time to see it - and that she believed you had to live to seventy to really see the effects of time.
In a world where many seek comfort in conformity and stasis Grace Murray Hopper created intellectual adventure and discovery wherever she worked. Her story shows us the wellspring of her success were attributes that are readily within everyone's grasp and that we too can create meaningful, deeply satisfying lives no matter what the scale of our inventions as long as we seek to change things up.
